Up and Down Play Results in Another Tri-Match Split for Chargers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 It was certainly a tale of two matches for the Lancaster Bible women's volleyball team on Saturday at Horst Athletic Center. The Chargers committed 21 errors and looked slow in the day's first match against Messiah, but rebounded to play their best match of the young season against Cairn as they swept the Highlanders, 3-0.

In the opener, Messiah dictated play from the get-go as they won, 25-15, 25-18, 25-19. The Chargers had just 23 kills and committed the aforementioned 21 errors on 97 attempts, while the Falcons had 40 kills and 17 errors. Senior Katie Coomber had nine kills and seven digs to pace the Chargers in the opening match, but Kristin Douglas' 12 kills and 11 digs helped Messiah improve to 4-2.

After the Falcons defeated Cairn, 3-0 in the middle match, Lancaster Bible jumped all over the Highlanders as well as the Chargers took the opening set, 25-17. The Chargers had nine kills compared to just two errors in the first set against Cairn and appeared to be a completely different team. Lancaster Bible didn't stop there as they crushed the Highlanders, 25-11 in the second set and had just one error compared to 11 kills.

The Chargers completed the sweep by taking the third set, 25-20 and posted their first victory over Cairn since the 2012 season. Coomber once again led Lancaster Bible as she had a match-high 13 kills. Sophomore Emily Olson added five kills and two blocks, while Joanna Butala had five kills and 10 digs. Junior Hannah Derr had a career-high five aces against Cairn to go along with her 23 assists and seven digs.

Lancaster Bible will host another tri-match on Tuesday as Northern Virginia Community College and Wilkes visit Horst Athletic Center on Tuesday. The Chargers will take on Wilkes at 4 p.m. and NOVA at 8 p.m. NOVA and Wilkes will play one another at 6 p.m.

Notes:
-The Chargers last victory against Cairn came on Sept. 25, 2012 when Lancaster Bible won, 3-2. In that match, Lauren Heliger had 25 kills, while Hannah Derr (then Hannah Metzler) had a program-record 50 assists.

-Cairn still leads the all-time series between the two teams, 34-10.

-Messiah improved to 5-0 all-time against Lancaster Bible.
