The Lancaster Bible men's basketball team saw its 15-game winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C. as Gallaudet used a superb second half of shooting to race past the Chargers, 64-46. The loss is the first for the Chargers since opening day on November 15 when Lancaster Bible lost to Messiah.Â
Trey Gordon and Ben Coleman had the hot hand for Gallaudet as they combined for 29 points on 10-of-13 shooting, including 7-of-9 from beyond the arc. The 3-pointers from Gallaudet are what spelled doom for the Chargers as the Bison were 7-of-8 from beyond the arc in the second half and 8-of-14 for the game. The Chargers meanwhile struggled from the floor all game and were just 4-of-19 from 3-point range.Â
After shooting the sixth highest shooting percentage in NCAA Division III this season (69.8 percent) on Friday night at Wilson, the Chargers shot a dismal 27.8 percent (15-of-54) from the field on Saturday. Lancaster Bible was 6-of-25 from field in the first half and trailed, 25-18 heading into the break.
"We struggled to put the ball in the hoop from just about everywhere today," Lancaster Bible Head Coach
Marshall Tague said.
Lancaster Bible cut its deficit to three, 32-29 on a three-point play from
CJ Dunston with 15:53 remaining, but Gallaudet began pouring in 3-pointers and used a 16-4 run over the next four minutes to 48-33 lead with 11:54 to play. Try as they might, the Chargers could not close the gap as Gordon and Coleman took the game over and when they weren't hitting shots, the other Gallaudet players were scoring easy baskets under the hoop.Â
"Gallaudet caught fire from outside in the second half and took advantage of their opportunities and we didn't," Tague said.Â
Joshua McGriff's layup with 5:52 remaining gave Gallaudet its biggest lead of the game at 58-37 and the Bison were on their way to their 12th win of the season.Â
The loss drops the Chargers to 15-2 overall and 9-1 in NEAC play. The Chargers lead the Bison in the NEAC South Division by 1 1/2 games and the two teams will face each other on the final weekend of the season in Lancaster.Â
Dondre Perry and
Albert Suniga each had 10 points for Lancaster Bible, while
CJ Dunston had five points and 12 rebounds.
Jon Bird added eight points and three rebounds for the Chargers who are now 3-6 all-time against Gallaudet.
Lancaster Bible returns to the court on Tuesday when the Chargers host Penn St. Abington at 8 p.m.
