Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Zach Freeman

Chargers Get Back to Winning Ways

After having its six-game winning streak was snapped on Saturday by #18 Elizabethtown, the Lancaster Bible men's soccer team returned to the win column on Wednesday as the Chargers defeated Berkeley (N.J.), 3-0 on Senior Day at Charger Field. The victory improves the Chargers to 10-3-3 this season, while the Knights wrapped up their season with a 4-13 record.

How it Happened: The Chargers had two corner kicks and two shots on goal in the early minutes of the game, but for the most part, much of the play was on the outer fringes of the field and there were few scoring chances for either team. As Lancaster Bible began to gain more and more control, senior Josiah Groff found sophomore Edward Bills cutting into the box and Bills took the pass and scored his sixth goal of the season to give the Chargers a 1-0 advantage.

Just 4:45 later, the Chargers made it 2-0 thanks once again to Mr. Bills. Freshman Mason Bard crossed the ball into the box and after it deflected off a player in the box, the ball found Bills' foot and he deposited the ball into a wide open net. Lancaster Bible goalkeeper Thiago Naque made one of his two saves late in the first half to keep the score 2-0 and the Chargers' offense took it from there in the second half as they fired 10 shots in the second half, including five in the first 14 minutes of the half.

After a Berkeley (N.J.) defender picked up his second yellow card of the day, resulting in a red card, with less than 20 minutes to play, the Chargers once again began to possess the ball the majority of the time. They were rewarded with a goal from freshman Caleb Nelson with 13:07 to play as he took a great chip pass from senior Alex Vocature and scored his third goal of the season.

By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible outshot the Knights, 19-6 and the Chargers fired 10 shots on goal...Each team had five corner kicks...Groff's assist was his seventh of the season and he now leads the North Eastern Athletic Conference in goals, assists and points...Thiago Naque made two saves to earn his first career win and shutout...Bills' two goals give him seven for the season after he had five as a freshman last year...Groff also had seven assists last season.

The Coach Says: "We had a bit of a slow start, but became more energized as the game went on," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Tom Ardt said. "I thought we responded well to their physical play and started to get more scoring chances as the game continued. As for our seniors, it is a great group of guys. They have come from all over the place and really helped this team become what it is."

Information Hodge Podge: This is the second straight season the Chargers have had 10 or more wins and the 12th time in program's 43-year history...Wednesday's win was the 44th of Ardt's career and he moved into second place on the all-time list in program history...Ardt's last win had moved him out of a tie with Josh Beers (2008-10) and Wednesday's victory moves him past Tom Figart, Jr. (1973-75, '85-'87)...Ardt trails program-leader Phil Nelson who went 65-43-3 over six seasons from 1988-93...Prior to Wednesday's game, the Chargers honored seniors Josue Bosque, Brian Edman, Nathan Grimley, Alex Vocature and Josiah Groff.

Up Next: Lancaster Bible will play its final four regular season games on the road, beginning with Saturday's NEAC contest at Penn College in Williamsport, Pa...The game is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
