Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Zach Freeman

Late Goal Helps Chargers Tie Wildcats

The Lancaster Bible women's soccer team turned a loss into tie on Saturday as the Chargers' Raegan Horst converted a penalty kick with 56 seconds to play to help the team earn a key point against Penn College. The tie moves the Chargers to 8-8-1 overall, but more importantly gets their North Eastern Athletic Conference record to 7-2-1 with two conference games remaining. The 22 points have Lancaster Bible in fourth place currently and the team trails Penn College by just one point. Each team has two games remaining, but the Wildcats must play the top two teams, Penn St. Berks and Penn St. Abington, in their final two games, while the Chargers face SUNY Cobleskill and SUNY Polytechnic.

How it Happened: Penn College controlled play for the first 25 minutes, but the Chargers kept possession and had the better chances in the final 20 minutes of the half, though neither team scored. The Wildcats broke the scoreless tie just 3:48 into the second half as Robyn Beddow scored her fourth goal of the season. The teams went back-and-forth after the goal as each team had two corner kicks over the next 15 minutes.

As the half went on, Lancaster Bible pressed to get the equalizer and though they had chances, could not convert until Penn College committed a foul in the box with just under a minute to play. Horst stepped up to the ball and fired a shot into the back of the net with 56 ticks left on the clock to knot the score at 1-1.

Each team had a shot on goal in the first overtime, but it was the Chargers who controlled play in the second overtime as they fired four shots on goal, but could not net the game-winner.

By the Numbers: The goal for Horst was her third of the season...Lancaster Bible outshot Penn College, 16-12 and held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks...Horst had a team-high seven shots, while senior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Scheuing made five saves.

The Coach Says: "I was extremely happy to see the girls battle for 110 minutes," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Leah Sipe said. "There isn't anything more I could have asked of them. They won most of the 50/50 balls and really put Penn College on its heels in the second half. Raegan finished a great PK and even though we didn't score in overtime, we had a lot of good chances."

Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible leads the all-time series, 1-0-1...The Chargers control their own destiny towards getting to host a NEAC Quarterfinal game as wins in their final two games will clinch the third or fourth seed...The game was Lancaster Bible's first tie since Nov. 6, 2011 when the Chargers lost in penalty kicks to Penn St. Abington in the NEAC Final...Despite losing in penalty kicks, the result of the game is officially a tie...The last regular season tie for the Chargers came on Oct. 14, 2009 when Lancaster Bible and College of Notre Dame (Md.) tied 2-2.

Up Next: Lancaster Bible is off until next Friday when they face SUNY Cobleskill in Cobleskill, N.Y. at 3:30 p.m.
