Making the first of its two trips to New York this week, the Lancaster Bible men's soccer team lost to Houghton, 5-0 on Tuesday evening in Houghton, N.Y. The loss drops the Chargers to 11-4-3 this season, while the Highlanders improved to 8-6-2.Â
How it Happened: Houghton took control the game early as Tyler Ashley scored his first goal of the season at the 15:25 mark. Ashley headed in a corner kick offering from Andrew Bussey to give the Highlanders the early advantage. The Highlanders stayed on the attack and continued to get scoring chances on Lancaster Bible goalkeeper
Thiago Naque and finally added their second goal with 2:25 to play in the first half thanks to Mitch Beattie's third goal of the year. Bussey collected the assist again as Beattie took Bussey's corner kick cross and fired it into the lower left-hand corner.
Lancaster Bible had an opportunity to cut the deficit in half midway through the second half, but
Josiah Groff's shot was saved and the score remained, 2-0. Houghton put the game away at the 72:49 mark as Ben Lawrence took a long pass from Bussey, beat a defender and scored his sixth goal of the season.
Houghton poured it on in the final 10 minutes as Bussey scored his third goal of the season at the 82:39 mark and 1:13 later, Landon Sheaffer scored to make it 5-0.Â
By the Numbers: Houghton outshot Lancaster Bible, 16-9 and held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks...
Edward Bills had a team-high four shots, while Naque made four saves in the loss...The five goals given up are the most the Chargers have allowed all season and are as many as Lancaster Bible had given up in its previous five games.
The Coach Says: "Obviously a disappointing game for us," Lancaster Bible Head Coach
Tom Ardt said. "I'm not sure it felt like a 5-0 game, as we had some chances, but we didn't convert any of our chances and they converted most of theirs. This is what happens when one team finishes its chances and the other one finishes none. I'm a bit concerned about the corner kick goals we gave up and we have to improve our shape defensively as we put ourselves in bad positions on the goals they scored. Give credit to Houghton, they showed up and we need to play better when we play quality teams like this. I think the guys learned something today and we will improve and move forward."
Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible is now 0-2 all-time against Houghton...The Highlanders defeated the Chargers, 1-0 last season in the NCCAA Div. I East Region Semifinal...The last time the Chargers gave up five goals was Oct. 19, 2013 at Cazenovia when Lancaster Bible lost, 5-2.
Up Next: Lancaster Bible will wrap-up its regular season this weekend when the Chargers face SUNY Cobleskill on Friday and SUNY Polytechnic on Saturday...The Chargers have clinched a NEAC playoff berth and the outcomes of this weekend's games all around the NEAC will determine the team's seed for the NEAC playoffs which start next week.
