The Lancaster Bible men's soccer team won its second straight game on Saturday as the Chargers overcame a 2-0 second half deficit and won 3-2 in double overtime over Penn St. Berks. The victory moves the Chargers to 5-2-3 overall and 2-2-1 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play. Penn St. Berks is now 4-6-1 and 2-4 in conference play.
How it Happened: After both teams had chances early in the game, Penn St. Berks opened the scoring thanks to T.J. Yurkovic who raced down the field and was able to tip the ball through Lancaster Bible goalkeeper
Josue Bosque's legs to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 advantage. The score remained the same through halftime, but just 45 seconds into the second half, Jon Mercier took advantage of a Lancaster Bible turnover and extended the Nittany Lions' lead to 2-0.
Staring a sub-.500 NEAC record in the face, freshman
Eric Bailey gave the Chargers the lift they needed as he scored his first collegiate goal with 34:56 to play off a feed from sophomore Nathan Recalo to cut the Chargers' deficit to one. Eight minutes later Lancaster Bible senior
Josiah Groff tied the game as he overpowered the Nittany Lions' defense and tipped the ball past the goalkeeper for his team-leading eighth goal of the season.
While the game got a bit chippy the rest of the way, the scoring chances for each team diminished and for the fifth time this season, the Chargers were headed to overtime. Both teams had a chance to score in the first overtime, but neither team could convert and for the third time in 2015 Lancaster Bible headed to a second overtime.Â
In the second overtime, Penn St. Berks had control of the first few minutes before the Chargers gained possession and drove the ball down the field. Sophomore
Edward Bills had his initial shot blocked, but regained possession and drew a foul in the box to earn his second penalty kick try of the season.
Penn St. Berks goalkeeper Rotman Saltos dove to his right as Bills connected with the ball, but Bills drove the ball almost right down the middle and gave the Chargers a 3-2 victory.
