Another game, another overtime for the Lancaster Bible men's soccer team, but for the second straight game, the extra time ended in celebration as the Chargers defeated Cazenovia, 1-0 thanks to sophomore
Edward Bills' third goal of the season. Bills scored the game-winning goal on Saturday as well as Lancaster Bible is now 6-2-3 overall this season and 3-2-1 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play.
How it Happened: Lancaster Bible came out of the gate well as the Chargers had five shots and two corner kicks in the first 10 minutes. Lancaster Bible continued to hold most of the possession, but Cazenovia began to turn the game around near halftime and had a few quality chances as well. The Wildcats continued their strong play early in the second half and nearly took the lead on several occasions. As the second half progressed the teams began to exchange possession and both goalkeepers had to make saves in the final 10 minutes to keep the game scoreless.
In the overtime period, the Chargers had all four shots, including
Jared Steiner's shot that hit the post just 1:21 into the overtime. With just under a minute to play in the first overtime, Bills collected the ball down the left-hand side of the field and found space to blast a shot past the Cazenovia goalkeeper and send the Chargers to their third straight victory.
By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible outshot Cazenovia, 23-11 and held an 11-6 edge in corner kicks...Lancaster Bible had 14 shots in the first half, but just five during the second half...Senior goalkeeper
Josue Bosque posted his third shutout of the season and third in four games...Bosque's 0.54 goals against average is the third best mark in the conference and his .917 save percentage is the best in the NEAC...The game-winning goal was the third of Bills' career and he now has eight career goals...His overtime goal was the first of the season that did not come via the penalty kick.
The Coach Says: "We were all definitely frustrated with our lack of execution during the game, but good teams find a way to win and we did that today," Lancaster Bible Head Coach
Tom Ardt said. "We have big games this weekend and we need to prepare well for them and execute a little better than we did today."
Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible is now 2-3 all-time against Cazenovia...After losing its first three games to Cazenovia, the Chargers have won two straight after last season's 4-1 victory in Cazenovia, N.Y...The Chargers are 2-1-3 in overtime this season...The previous high for overtime games in a season for Lancaster Bible was four which occurred in 2011, 2012 and 2013.
