Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Zach Freeman

Wildcats Top Chargers

The Lancaster Bible men's soccer team finished 8-3-1 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play, but it is the team's third and final conference loss, which happened on Saturday at SUNY Polytechnic, that may come back and haunt the Chargers. The loss, a 4-2 decision to the Wildcats, combined with Wells' victory over Cazenovia, means the Chargers will not host a NEAC Quarterfinal game this Wednesday and will in fact travel back to SUNY Polytechnic for a NEAC Quarterfinal showdown.

How it Happened: Lancaster Bible got on the board just 4:05 into the game as sophomore Edward Bills scored his ninth goal of the season. The lead lasted for only 15:29 as SUNY Polytechnic tied the match on a penalty kick goal by Jeremiah Besse. Less than two minutes later, the Wildcats took the lead as Bazo Coulibaly scored to make it 2-1.

The score remained the same though halftime and well into the second half until SUNY Polytechnic added an insurance goal from Francesco Tine with 18:34 to play. SUNY Polytechnic put the game away 10 minutes later on a goal from Nick McBride to make it 4-1. Bills added his second of the game, and 10th of the season, with 37 seconds to play, but it was not enough as the Chargers dropped their third road game of the season.

By the Numbers: Bills joins Josiah Groff as the only players with 10 or more goals this season for the Chargers...Bills' 10 goals are tied for the fifth-most in the NEAC and his 25 points are also the fifth-most in the conference...Lancaster Bible actually outshot the Wildcats, 15-11, including, 11-5 in the second half, but as was the case in Tuesday's, 5-0 loss to Houghton, Lancaster Bible's opponent was able to convert its chances, while the Chargers could not.

The Coach Says: "We played really well the first 10 or 15 minutes and the early goal was big for us," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Tom Ardt said. "Not sure if we got overconfident or what it was, but SUNY Poly's two quick goals gave them life and they were the hungrier at that point of the game. In the second half, I thought we played really well for long stretches, but just couldn't get the equalizer. Even when they made it 3-1, we felt like we could come back, but just couldn't find the back of the net. Having to play these guys again in a few days, we definitely feel like we can play with SUNY Poly and beat them up here."

Information Hodge Podge: This is the second straight season and third time in five years that the Chargers have advanced to the NEAC Playoffs...Having to play the same team in the playoffs that they played in their regular season finale is nothing new for the Chargers as Lancaster Bible defeated Keuka, 3-1 in last season's regular season finale and then beat the Wolfpack, 1-0 in overtime two weeks later in the NEAC Semifinals...Both Lancaster Bible and SUNY Polytechnic finished with 25 points (8-3-1 record), but with the Wildcats' win on Saturday, they earned the tie-breaker...Penn St. Berks will travel to Keuka in the other NEAC Quarterfinal, while Morrisville State earned the top seed and will host the NEAC Final Four and Wells is the second seed...The winner of Lancaster Bible / SUNY Polytechnic will face top-seeded Morrisville State in the NEAC Quarterfinals next Saturday at 11:30 a.m.

Up Next: Lancaster Bible will face SUNY Polytechnic on Wednesday in Utica, N.Y. at 2 p.m. in the NEAC Quarterfinals.
