Lancaster Bible, overtime and the North Eastern Athletic Conference Playoffs seem to be a winning fall recipe as the Chargers prevailed in overtime for the second straight season in the NEAC playoffs on Wednesday at SUNY Polytechnic. Sophomore
Justin Stoltzfus broke a scoreless tie just 45 seconds into overtime as the Chargers stunned the Wildcats and will now play top-seeded Morrisville State in the NEAC Semifinals on Saturday.
How it Happened: Just four days after the two teams combined to score six goals in a 4-2 SUNY Poly victory, Wednesday's game was a physical, defensive battle as the teams combined for just nine first-half shots. The Wildcats had chances to score early in the second half, but two corner kick attempts and two shots produced no goals and the Chargers countered with back-to-back corner kicks midway through that half that also did not yield any goals.
A final corner kick by the Chargers with 1:24 to play in regulation also produced no goals and for the second straight season, Lancaster Bible headed to overtime in its opening NEAC playoff game.
After five corner kicks during regulation that failed, the Chargers finally caught their break early in the first overtime. Lancaster Bible was awarded a corner kick just 17 seconds into overtime and after the Chargers set up the play, senior
Josiah Groff's cross found Stoltzfus' chest as Stoltzfus charged towards the net. Because Groff's cross was already curling towards the goal, after the ball hit Stoltzfus' chest, it deflected even more so towards the goal and hit a SUNY Poly defender who was backing into the net which resulted in a goal for the Chargers.
By the Numbers: The goal by Stoltzfus was his second of the season, while Groff earned his 11th assist of the year...Goalkeeper
Josue Bosque made four saves for his fifth shutout of the season...Bosque is 8-1-1 this season for the Chargers...SUNY Poly outshot the Chargers, 11-7, while each team had six corner kicks.
The Coach Says: "Obviously this is a huge result for us," Lancaster Bible Head Coach
Tom Ardt said. "Today was a highly competitive, back-and-forth game and both teams have a mutual respect for one another. We play different styles, but today was a great game. We attacked them on corners and it finally paid off in overtime. We had a lot of players rise to the occasion today and play some of their best soccer of the season."
