For the second straight year, the Lancaster Bible men's soccer team saw its chance at a North Eastern Athletic Conference championship end at Drake Field in Morrisville, N.Y. The Chargers were once again doomed by the occupants of Drake Field, Morrisville State, as the Mustangs defeated Lancaster Bible, 1-0 in the NEAC Semifinals. Morrisville State will face Wells in Sunday's NEAC Final as the Express defeated Keuka, 2-1 in the other NEAC Semifinal contest.
Saturday's loss drops the Chargers to 13-6-3 this season and Lancaster Bible will now turn its attention to the NCCAA Div. I Playoffs which will start at a date to be determined in the next few days.
How it Happened: Unlike Lancaster Bible's 1-0 regular season loss to Morrisville State that saw the Mustangs score at the 10:57 mark and then hold off the Chargers the rest of the way, Saturday's NEAC Semifinal was scoreless through halftime and well into the second half. In the first half, the Chargers had an early scoring opportunity off a shot by
Brendon Dooley, but Morrisville State's Rob Larkin made the first of his five saves. The Mustangs had their own chances throughout the first half as well, but Lancaster Bible goalkeeper
Josue Bosque made all three saves he needed to make ot keep the game scoreless through 45 minutes.
Lancaster Bible's best chance of the game came five minutes into the second half when sophomore
Edward Bills had a terrific shot on goal that Larkin blocked to keep the score 0-0. Just before the 65th minute, Morrisville State was awarded a corner kick and off the set piece, Jamieson McKoy headed the ball into the net for his 12th goal of the season. McKoy scored the lone goal against Lancaster Bible during the regular season as well and had the game-winner in last season's NEAC Final too.
The Chargers picked up their play after McKoy's goal and had five more shots towards the goal, but Larkin was up to the task on the shots that were on goal and the Chargers could not get the equalizer before time expired.
By the Numbers: Bosque finished with four saves and fellow senior
Josiah Groff led the team with four shots...The Chargers have been outscored, 4-0 over the past three games against Morrisville State...For the game, the Mustangs outshot the Chargers, 16-11, but each team only had five shots on goal.
The Coach Says: "It's really tough to swallow this one," Lancaster Bible Head Coach
Tom Ardt said. "We played well from beginning to end and gave them everything we had. We didn't let them have very many good chances until the end when we committed guys forward. We had some great chances, including one that their keeper somehow got a foot on and this was just a great battle by both teams. I'm very proud of the unity that we showed today. This is the most united group of guys I've seen in our soccer program."
