Box Score The Lancaster Bible women's basketball team ended its season on a winning note as the Chargers defeated Kentucky Christian, 57-53 on Saturday evening in Joplin, Mo. in the NCCAA Division II 3rd Place Game. The victory caps a stellar year for the Chargers who finished 24-6 and tied the school records for wins in a season.Â
The third place finish is the best in program history and comes on the heels of last season's team earning a fifth place finish.
On Saturday, the Chargers trailed at halftime, 31-29, but held Kentucky Christian to just 8-of-26 shooting in the second half to keep the game close and then pull out the victory late in the game. Though the Chargers shot poorly from the field, 20-of-63 (31.7 percent), they were excellent from the free throw line as Lancaster Bible was 15-of-20 from the charity stripe.
Like Kentucky Christian, the Chargers did not fare well from the floor in the second half (7-of-30), but Lancaster Bible was 13-of-17 from the free throw line in the second 20 minutes.
Katy Stover,
Aubrey Folger,
Shanice Smith and
Kirsten Webster combined to go 15-of-16 from the free throw line on Saturday to help secure the win.
For the game, Folger finished with 18 points and 17 rebounds, her sixth double-double in six career games at the NCCAA National Tournament. Stover added 17 points and five rebounds, while Webster capped her impressive season with 12 points. Smith had eight points and 13 boards for the Chargers who have won 20 or more games in a season for three straight years.
"I'm proud of the girls for fighting hard today," Lancaster Bible Head Coach
Rachel Steinbarger said. "Not many teams get to end their season with a win and we able to do that and will now build on that during the offseason."
