The Lancaster Bible baseball team will return home from Florida winless as the Chargers lost their final three games in Port Charlotte, Fla. to fall to 0-7 this season. The Chargers lost to Wooster on Friday and dropped a doubleheader to Denison on Saturday. Lancaster Bible returns to action on Wednesday when they face Dickinson at 3:30 p.m. in Carlisle, Pa. A quick recap of each of the Chargers' final three games in Florida is below.
Wooster 20, Lancaster Bible 8After going down, 3-0 in the top of the first, the Chargers battled back to score four runs in their half of the first as
Jimmy Eagan continued to swing a hot bat and crushed a three-run home run to give Lancaster Bible a 4-3 lead after one inning. The roles reversed in the second inning as Wooster scored four runs and the Chargers scored three as the game moved to the third inning tied at 7-7. Singles by
Justin Taylor and
Nate Long helped Lancaster Bible tie the game in the second and
Josh Mayer also hit a sacrifice fly.
Wooster scored three more runs in the third to take a 10-7 lead, but Lancaster Bible responded again, this time in the fourth as
Erich Carroll singled home Taylor to make it a 10-8 game. Wooster pulled away for good though in the sixth inning as it plated six runs and added four more in the seventh to make it a 20-8 game.Â
Lancaster Bible smashed 18 hits, but left 13 runners on base. Carroll, Long and Eagan each finished 3-for-5, while Eagan also drove in three runs.
JJ Sanchez added two hits for the Chargers, while Mayer and Taylor also had two hits. Taylor and
Hunter Gray also scored two runs. Freshmen
Nate Staffieri and
Zack Leonard also had hits for Lancaster Bible.Â
Denison 7, Lancaster Bible 6 -- Game 1The Chargers took a 3-0 lead early in the game as they took advantage of two Denison errors. Denison scored the next seven runs of the game and took a 7-3 lead into the seventh, before the Lancaster Bible bats woke up again and made things interesting in the final inning.Â
After Gray grounded out to third, Mayer reached on a error which was followed by a Taylor single to put runners on first and second with one out. Carroll struck out, but Eagan singled to right field to load the bases for Long. Long's single to left field scored Mayer and Taylor and advanced Eagan to second to make it 7-5.
Brian Niedergall followed that with another single to left which scored Eagan and moved Long to second.Â
With runners on first and second,
JJ Sanchez did everything he could to extend the game, but his groundout to short ended the comeback bid as the Chargers dropped game one.
Zack Leonard pitched well in the loss as scattered 10 hits over 5 1/3 innings of work and struck out two. Taylor, Carroll and Eagan each had two hits, while Long was 1-for-4 with three runs driven in.
Ryan Hartline and Sanchez also had hits for the Chargers.
Denison 14, Lancaster Bible 0 -- Game 2For as close as game one was, game two was a laugher as Denison pounded 20 hits and scored 13 runs in the first three innings. Lancaster Bible managed just three hits as Taylor, Long and Carroll had Lancaster Bible's hits.Â
Denison had 11 players get at least one hit as the Big Red improved to 5-4 this season.
