The Lancaster Bible baseball team won two different ways on Wednesday as they used some late game heroics to earn a 4-3 10-inning victory in game one against Lincoln Christian (Ill.) and then cruised in a game two laugher, 12-5 over the Lions at Charger Field. The victories improve the Chargers to 4-8 this season and they will take a four-game winning streak into the start of North Eastern Athletic Conference play on Saturday when Lancaster Bible travels to Gallaudet in the nation's capital for a 1 p.m. doubleheader. Below is a quick recap of Wednesday's games.
Lancaster Bible 4, Lincoln Christian 3 -- 10 inningsAfter taking an early 1-0 lead, Lancaster Bible had to overcome two separate one-run deficits, the last coming in the Chargers' final at-bat in the seventh inning. Down 3-2 in the seventh with one out,
Ryan Hartline reached on a error by the center fielder, which was followed by
Josh Mayer reaching base on an error by the third baseman. With Hartline at second and Mayer at first,
Nate Long singled to load the bases for sophomore
Justin Taylor.Â
Taylor hit into a fielder's choice which was good enough for Hartline to cross the plate and tie the score at 3-3. Lincoln Christian left the bases loaded in the eighth and left two on in the ninth as they could not gain the upper hand. After relief pitcher
Mitch Kumher got the Lions in order in the 10th, Taylor walked to open the bottom half of the inning for the Chargers. Into the box stepped
Erich Carroll who quickly drove a ball to the outfield for a double which scored Taylor and won Lancaster Bible the game.
Carroll and Long each went 2-for-5 for the Chargers, while
JJ Sanchez was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Freshman
Braden Elliott had another strong pitching outing as he scattered six hits over six innings and struck out two. Kumher earned his first win of the season, while
Gabe Yoder pitched a strong 2 1/3 innings as well.
Lancaster Bible 12, Lincoln Christian 5After only mustering seven hits in 10 innings in game one, Lancaster Bible had 11 in the first three innings of game two as the Chargers exploded for 11 runs in the first three innings and won going away, 12-5. Lancaster Bible scored four times in the first and six more times in the second before Long blasted his first home run of the season in the third.
Josh Mayer finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while
Hunter Gray, Taylor, Long and Hartline also had two hits apiece. Carroll continued to swing a hot bat as his three-run triple in the second inning increased Lancaster Bible's lead to 7-0.
Jimmy Eagan and Sanchez also drove in two runs as the Chargers scored double-digit runs for the third time in four games.
