After scoring just 15 runs in its first six North Eastern Athletic Conference games, the Lancaster Bible softball team exploded for 21 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Gallaudet on Saturday in Washington, D.C. The Chargers won game one, 12-2 in six innings and won game two, 9-0 in five innings. The victories improve Lancaster Bible to 6-10 overall and 4-4 in conference play.Â
Lancaster Bible is right back in action on Sunday when the Chargers travel to Chambersburg, Pa. to take on Wilson for a doubleheader that is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. Below is a recap of Saturday's games.
Game 1: Lancaster Bible 12, Gallaudet 2 (6 innings)Freshman
Julia D'Arrigo led the game off with a home run for the Chargers, but it was Gallaudet who earned a 2-1 lead after one inning of play. The score remained the same until the third when
Kelsey Collins hit a sacrifice fly to score D'Arrigo and tie the game at 2-2. An inning later, Lancaster Bible got two run singles from both
Richelle Kane and
Kellie Wallace to open up a 6-2 lead on the Bison.Â
The Chargers scored three more times in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run single by
Kristen Hartline that gave Lancaster Bible an 8-2 lead. Wallace added her third RBI of the day thanks to a sacrifice fly later in the inning and Lancaster Bible scored three more times in the sixth to invoke the 10-run rule.Â
In the sixth, freshman
Alicia Ort knocked in her first run of the season thanks to a sacrifice fly that scored
Kellie Wright and made the score 12-2 in favor of the Chargers.Â
In game one, D'Arrigo finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Hartline was 2-for-2 with two walks, three runs scored and three RBI. Kane also finished with three RBI as she went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
Ali Morton, Wallace and Wright also had two hits apiece for the Chargers who tied a season-high with 13 hits.
Starter
Emily Coffman earned her second win of the season as she scattered nine hits over six innings and struck out three.
Game 2: Lancaster Bible 9, Gallaudet 0 (5 innings)Lancaster Bible scored in every inning of game two as the Chargers smashed another eight hits and got a terrific performance from sophomore
Kelsey Collins. Collins pitched a complete game two-hitter and was 2-for-3 from the plate with two home runs.
Ali Morton finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while senior
Marissa Hardy picked up her first RBI of the season with an RBI groundout in the fifth inning.Â
Kellie Wright had another hit in game two, while D'Arrigo was spectacular again as she went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
Collins added four more strikeouts to her season total and she now has 50 this season which leads the NEAC. The game two win was her fourth victory of the season which is tied for the second most in the conference and her 1.43 earned run average is also the second best mark in the NEAC.
