With a chance to stay in the North Eastern Athletic Conference playoff picture via a win or two on Saturday at Penn St. Berks, the Lancaster Bible softball team fell flat and suffered back-to-back losses in Reading, Pa. and ended its chances of advancing to the NEAC playoffs. The Nittany Lions won, 9-3 in game one in which the Chargers committed six errors and Penn St. Berks put the hammer down in game two with an 11-1 five-inning victory. Lancaster Bible is now 12-18 overall and 8-10 in conference play.
Trailing, 2-0 in the fourth inning of game one, the Chargers sliced the deficit in half with an unearned run as
Courtney Koser grounded out to the shortstop, which advanced
Kellie Wallace to third. Thanks to an error by the first baseman on the throw, Wallace turned the corner and scored, making the score 2-1. The wheels came off in the bottom of the fifth for the Chargers as the Nittany Lions scored four times, all unearned, to take a 6-1 lead.Â
The Chargers got two runs back in the top half of the sixth inning thanks to a two-run single from
Kellie Wright, but the Nittany Lions poured on three more runs in the bottom half of the inning and then closed the door in the seventh for a 9-3 victory. Lancaster Bible pitcher
Kelsey Collins took the loss despite giving up just two earned runs and striking out four.
Ali Morton (2-for-3) and Koser (2-for-4) each had two hits for the Chargers, while
Emily Coffman was 1-for-3 with a run scored.Â
Game two was completely different as Penn St. Berks scored 10 times in the first three innings, including seven runs in the second inning, to win, 11-1 in five innings. Lancaster Bible managed just three hits in game two as Wallace, Coffman and Collins each had a hit for the Chargers. Collins drove in the lone run for Lancaster Bible as she doubled in Wallace in the third inning.
Lancaster Bible will wrap-up its schedule on Monday and Tuesday as the Chargers face Valley Forge on Monday in Phoenixville, Pa. for a doubleheader that is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. The Chargers will conclude their regular season the following day as they take on Penn St. Abington in Abington, Pa. for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
The Chargers need just one win in their final four games to set a new program record for wins in a season.
