The Lancaster Bible softball team made history during its sweep of Valley Forge on Monday in Phoenixville, Pa. as the Chargers won their 13th and 14th games of the season, eclipsing the old program record of 12 which was set last season. The Chargers took game one, 9-1 behind a tremendous pitching performance from sophomore
Kelsey Collins and fellow pitcher
Emily Coffman, in front of a large fan section of family and friends in her hometown, earned the 15-0 victory in game two.Ā
Lancaster Bible improves to 14-18 this season and will conclude its season on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Penn St. Abington in Abington, Pa. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
On Monday, Lancaster Bible actually trailed 1-0 after the first inning, but the offense kicked into gear in the second as
Julia D'Arrigo hit a sacrifice fly that scored Coffman and the Chargers scored two more times thanks to a Valley Forge error to take a 3-1 lead after two innings.
Alicia Ort continued her late season tear as she singled home two more runs in the third and another sacrifice fly, this one by
Richelle Kane, gave the Chargers a 6-1 lead.Ā
Courtney Koser crushed her fourth home run of the season in the fourth inning, this one a two-run homer, to extend the Chargers' lead to 8-1 and
Ali Morton singled home Collins in the sixth to produce the final score of 9-1. In between all of the offense, Collins spun another gem as she allowed just two hits and struck out 11. Her final strike out came against Valley Forge's Amanda McGinness who had not struck out all season long (72 plate appearances). Collins' 2-2 pitch found the corner as she earned the backwards K and gave Lancaster Bible its 13th victory of the season.
Morton finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored, while
Kristen Hartline and Coffman each scored two runs.
The Lancaster Bible offense exploded in game two as the Chargers scored 10 runs in the first inning. D'Arrigo kicked things off with a lead-off home run as the Chargers sent 15 batters to the plate in the first inning. D'Arrigo singled in her second at-bat of the inning, while Koser reached base twice in the inning as well. Two of the first three batters of the second inning reached base, including
Marissa Hardy who had her third hit of the season, and D'Arrigo blasted her second home run of the game and fourth of the season to clear the bases and give the Chargers a 13-0 lead.Ā
D'Arrigo finished game two 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored, while
Kellie Wallace was 2-for-3 with an RBI and four runs scored. Koser added two more hits and scored two more runs and Kane finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Collins was also 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored as the Chargers improved to 14-18.Ā
Coffman, like Collins in game one, allowed just two hits as she earned her fifth victory of the season on a field she pitched at several times growing up. Coffman struck out just two batters, but induced eight ground balls and five fly outs.
