For the second time in three days, the Lancaster Bible baseball team ran into two solid pitching efforts as Hood swept a non-conference doubleheader from the Chargers in Frederick, Md. The Blazers took game one, 10-1 and repeated their offensive effort in game two with a 10-2 victory. The losses drop the Chargers to 10-19 this season with three games remaining.Â
All of the game one offense came in the top of the first for Lancaster Bible as
Erich Carroll continued his season-long tear with an RBI single to center to give the Chargers a 1-0 advantage. Two of Lancaster Bible's five game-one hits came in the first inning as Hood starter Jake Franke settled in and allowed just three hits the rest of the way.Â
The Blazers offense answered right back in the bottom half of the first inning with five runs on four hits to take a 5-1 lead which stood until the fifth inning when Hood tacked on two more runs to extend its lead to 7-1. Hood used three doubles in the bottom half of the sixth inning to score three more times to produce the final score of 10-1 as the Chargers lost for the fifth time in six games.
Carroll finished game one 2-for-3, while
Braden Elliott,
Justin Taylor and
Ricky Bisch had the other hits for Lancaster Bible. Chargers' starter
Nate Burns pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits and five earned runs while striking out three.Â
Game two began just like game one as the Chargers jumped out to an early lead as Taylor doubled to right center in the top of the first which scored Elliott and
Caleb Mayer. The 2-0 lead didn't last an inning as Hood scored another five runs in the bottom of the first to take a 5-2 lead after one inning of play.Â
Hood scored a run in the second, third and fourth innings as well to take an 8-2 lead after four innings. After recording two hits in the first, the Chargers had just two hits the rest of the way and Hood scored two more times in the sixth to win, 10-2.
Caleb Mayer finished 1-for-2 with a run scored, while brother
Josh Mayer was 1-for-1. Taylor and Carroll had the other hits for Lancaster Bible who had just nine hits over the two games.Â
Starter
Wade Zweizig went four innings as he allowed eight earned runs and struck out two.
Gabe Yoder and
Mark Sheriff pitched the final two innings in relief.Â
Lancaster Bible returns to the diamond on Wednesday when they host rival Cairn at 3 p.m. for a single nine-inning game.
