Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse | | Zach Freeman

Chargers Earn First Conference Win

The Lancaster Bible women's lacrosse team won its first North Eastern Athletic Conference game of the season on Tuesday as the Chargers caged the Eagles of St. Elizabeth, 17-3 at Charger Field. The victory improves the Chargers to 2-7 overall and 1-4 in NEAC play, while the Eagles drop to 0-7 overall and 0-5 in conference play.

Playing through a driving rain in the first half, Lancaster Bible had control of the game from the opening draw, but didn't begin to pull away from the Eagles until midway through the half when the Chargers scored three times in less than a minute to extend their lead from 3-0 to 6-0. The Chargers poured in four more goals prior to the end of the half to make it 10-0, but St. Elizabeth finally got on the board with 1:53 to play in the first on a goal by Jessica Nunez.

In the first half for Lancaster Bible, sophomore Alyssa Wesner scored four times, while junior Cheyenne Benson and sophomore Naomi Otis each scored twice. Freshman Myranda Kemrer and sophomore Joanna Shughart also added goals for the Chargers in the first.

Each of the goal scorers from the first half added goals early in the second half as Lancaster Bible opened a 14-1 lead with 20:36 to play on Benson's third goal of the game as she completed her first career hat trick. The Eagles scored again just over two minutes later, but back-to-back goals from Kemrer just minutes apart increased the lead to 16-2. Mandi Betts' first career goal with 8:07 to play put the icing on the cake for the Chargers as they won a NEAC game for the first time since April 5, 2014 when they defeated Wilson, 15-5.

Lancaster Bible held a 48-10 advantage in shots and a 16-6 edge in draw controls. The Chargers also picked up 42 ground balls compared to St. Elizabeth's 29. Benson, Kemrer and Otis each finished with two assists and Kemrer now leads the team with five assists this season. Goalkeeper Bethany Dickerson made three saves in the first half to earn her second win of the season. Fellow goalkeeper Tia Alvarez made two saves in the second half as well.

The last time Lancaster Bible scored 17 goals in a game was April 27, 2011 when they defeated Penn St. Abington, 17-2.

Lancaster Bible heads to New York this weekend as they face SUNY Polytechnic on Friday at 4 p.m. and Medaille on Saturday at 4 p.m.
