The Lancaster Bible men's soccer team opened North Eastern Athletic Conference play with a 3-2 victory over Wells on Friday afternoon at Charger Field.
Josiah Groff's two goals, including the game-winner with just over 16 minutes to play, were the difference as Lancaster Bible improved to 2-0-2 overall and 1-0 in NEAC play. The loss drops Wells to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in NEAC play.
How it Happened: After trading possession for much of the first twenty minutes of a game that was mainly played in the midfield, Groff took a pass from fellow senior
Alex Vocature and scored into the lower left-hand corner for his second goal of the season. The Chargers continued to control much of the pace of play following the goal, but Wells capitalized on one of its first chances of the game with less than seven minutes left in the half as Jack Pilgrim beat
Thiago Naque to the ball and chipped it by him to tie the game at 1-1.Â
Just under four minutes later, Pilgrim was at it again as he took a pass from Justin Bingham and blasted the ball past
Vann Sutphin who had relieved Naque after he left with an injury. So instead of being up a goal or tied, the Chargers went into halftime trailing for the second straight game. Out of halftime though, the Chargers once again controlled play and
Jared Steiner tied the game at 2-2 after he dribbled through the Wells defense and scored into the right-hand side of the net for his first goal of the season.
Both teams had scoring chances as the half progressed, but Groff put the Chargers ahead for good with 16:11 to play as he gathered the ball just outside the box, dribbled in and chipped the ball over the goalkeeper. The ball crossed the line just as the Wells defense was closing in on the ball and the Chargers had a 3-2 advantage. Wells pressed for the equalizer for the next 15 minutes, but Lancaster Bible's defense stood pat and secured the win.
By the Numbers: Wells actually outshot the Chargers thanks to its late-game push to tie the game as the Express had 15 shots to Lancaster Bible's 10...The Chargers had just four shots on goal, but three went in as the Chargers earned the win...Groff has three goals in four games after having seven in 20 games last season...Groff's eight points (3G, 2A) lead the team and he has the game-winning goal in both of Lancaster Bible's wins.
Information Hodge Podge: The four-game unbeaten streak to start the season is the longest since the 2008 team began the season 4-0...Groff now has 17 goals in his career which is 21st on the all-time goal scoring list at Lancaster Bible.
