Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Zach Freeman

Late Goal Lifts Chargers Past Wolves

The Lancaster Bible College women's soccer team played its first road game in two weeks on Friday and though it took 85 minutes to break through, the Chargers earned the only goal of the game and defeated Keuka, 1-0 in Keuka Park, N.Y. Lancaster Bible is now 9-4 overall and 8-1 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play, while Keuka is now 7-5 overall and 6-3 in conference action.

How it Happened: The teams went back-and-forth for much of the first half, but produced little offensive chances as the Chargers registered two shots, while the Wolves had just one. The second half brought more chances, but mostly for the Chargers as they picked up the pace in the second 45 minutes.

After a couple of great saves by Keuka goalkeeper, Talia Cruz, that kept the game scoreless, the Chargers finally broke through with 5:45 to play as Rachel Kumher took a shot from 25 yards out that went up and over Cruz and gave Lancaster Bible a 1-0 lead. The Chargers fought off a final effort from the Wolves as Lancaster Bible goalkeeper Kaitlyn Scheuing made a save in the final seconds to preserve the shutout and give the Chargers the win.

By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible outshot Keuka, 12-5, including 5-3 in shots on goal...The Chargers held a 10-4 advantage in shots in the second half...Lancaster Bible had four corner kicks, while the Wolves had one...Kumher's goal was her third of the season...Scheuing has eight shutouts this season...Lancaster Bible has shutouts in three straight games.

The Coach Says: "We came out a little flat in the first half, but took control in the second half," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Leah Sipe-McDermott said. "Their goalkeeper made a couple of really nice saves, but Rachel's goal was a perfect shot and helped us get the win."

"We need to get ready for tomorrow and come away with a victory," Sipe-McDermott said. "Two wins in New York is always nice and we are taking the right steps on the way to where we want to be."

Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible is now 6-1 all-time against Keuka...The Chargers defeated the Wolves twice last season, 1-0 in double overtime in the regular season and 3-0 in the NEAC Quarterfinals...Scheuing's eight shutouts are just two from tying her career-high of 10 which she accomplished in 2014.
