The Lancaster Bible College men's soccer team gave everything they had for almost 107 minutes on Wednesday at Charger Field, but the Chargers came up just short as 14th ranked Elizabethtown scored with just over three minutes remaining in double overtime to secure a 3-2 victory. The loss drops the Chargers to 7-8 this season, while the Blue Jays improved to 11-2-1.
How it Happened: The Blue Jays opened the scoring just 12:02 into the contest as Jeff Light scored his fifth goal of the season on a nice cross from Scott Hess. After Hess drove into the corner with the ball, he crossed it into the box where Light was waiting and headed the ball into the back of the net. A little over 12 minutes later, Elizabethtown's leading scorer, Gilbert Waso got free at the top of the box and used his right foot to curve the ball past Lancaster Bible goalkeeper
Vann Sutphin to make it 2-0.Â
Lancaster Bible had a couple of good scoring chances off of set pieces in the final 10 minutes of the first half, but the score remained 2-0 as the teams went into halftime.Â
The game had basically the same feel through the first 20 minutes of the second half as the first half played out, but after the ball bounced off an Elizabethtown defender and found the foot of Lancaster Bible forward
Edward Bills, the Chargers' fortunes began to change. As the ball bounced in the air, Bills put a great boot into it and the ball curved beautifully into the top-right corner and the Chargers cut their deficit in half.Â
Just 1:21 later, with the Chargers pressing again,
Ben Noel found himself at the top of the box and he scored his first goal of the season into the left-side of the net and tied the game at 2-2 with 24:26 remaining. The teams exchanged chances over the final 20 minutes, but neither could get the game-winner and Lancaster Bible defender
Jared Jordan was the main reason Elizabethtown didn't win the game in the final minutes. A Blue Jays shot on goal was going towards the top-right corner of the net over top of Sutphin who had come out of his net, but Jordan leapt into the air and headed the ball over the crossbar to keep the game at 2-2.
After neither team could score in the opening 10 minutes of overtime, the Blue Jays were awarded a free kick from 32 yards away from the goal. Elizabethtown's Scott Hess chipped the ball toward the goal and it was tipped by Mitchell Gochnauer. As it was tipped, Sutphin was bumped into and could not make a play on the ball and it went into the back of the net for the game-winning goal. No call was made and the goal stood as the game-winner.
