Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Zach Freeman

Chargers March On

The Lancaster Bible College women's soccer team won its first-ever NCCAA Division I Midwest Region playoff game on Tuesday as the Chargers defeated Cincinnati Christian, 3-2 at Charger Field. Lancaster Bible had been 0-2 over the past two seasons in the NCCAA Playoffs, but a goal by senior Alyssa Wesner at 69:12 helped the Chargers defeat the Eagles and put Lancaster Bible into the Midwest Region Semifinals on Friday. The Chargers are now 16-6 this season, while the Eagles end their year with a 10-9-1 mark.

How it Happened: Both offenses were in full gear in the opening 45 minutes as the teams went end-to-end and many chances. The Eagles got on the board first at 18:00 as Kristen Rice netted her fourth goal of the year. Rice dribbled the ball into the middle of the box and drove a ball back towards the left post and beat a diving Kaitlyn Scheuing.

Lancaster Bible didn't let the goal bother them as the Chargers turned up the pressure and were rewarded at 35:59 as junior Raegan Horst scored her 11th goal of the year off a great feed from Dannie DeVinney. DeVinney picked up a loose ball at midfield and was able to give a lead pass to Horst who used her right foot on a misdirection shot to beat Cincinnati Christian goalkeeper Kendra Steepe.

DeVinney continued her impressive freshman campaign just 5:27 later as she tipped in a shot by Maggie Arnold. Arnold picked up a loose ball in the box and shot it through a crowd toward the left post. DeVinney was able to get a foot on it and send it up and over the defender covering the post.

The lead was short-lived however as the Eagles came right down the field and scored 12 seconds later as Maren Hance scored her seventh goal of the year. Hance took the ball down the right-hand side of the field and drilled a shot short-side past Scheuing to knot the game at 2-2.

The score remained the same through halftime and out of the break, Lancaster Bible had almost all of the offensive chances. The pressure once again finally paid off as Arnold put a ball into the box and it hit off an Eagles defender and off of Wesner and into the back of the goal. Wesner never put a foot on the ball, but the deflection off of her shoulder was enough to send the ball into the goal, her 12th tally of the year.

Cincinnati Christian had a few late chances, including a late corner kick, but the Lancaster Bible defense was up to the task and preserved the 3-2 victory.

By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible outshot the Eagles, 15-11, though Cincinnati Christian held an 8-5 edge in shots on goal...The Chargers had an 8-5 edge in corner kicks...DeVinney's goal was her sixth of the year...Scheuing finished with six saves in her final game at Charger Field.
