Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Zach Freeman

Lancaster Bible Nets First Victory

Lancaster Bible College forward Courtney Goyak didn't play basketball last season, but the Chargers sure are happy she's playing this year. Goyak had her second straight 20-point, 20-rebound game as she poured in 27 points and grabbed 25 rebounds to lead the Chargers past Penn College, 75-66 in Williamsport, Pa. The victory moves the Chargers to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play. The Wildcats dropped to 0-4, 0-1 NEAC.

How it Happened: Lancaster Bible started slow as the Chargers scored just five points in the first six minutes of the contest. The Chargers' defense kept the team in the game though as Lancaster Bible was tied at 5-5 with Penn College after those initial six minutes. The offense woke up late in the quarter and the Chargers led 16-13 after 10 minutes of play.

After scoring 13 points in the final four minutes of the opening quarter, the Lancaster Bible offense sputtered again in the second quarter as the Chargers scored just one point in the first 4:26 of the second 10-minutes. Goyak and freshman Caitlin Hickey picked up the play for Lancaster Bible midway through the second quarter and combined to score the team's first 10 points. Hickey's layup with 4:07 to play gave the Chargers a 26-20 lead. After Penn College tied the game at 29-29 late in the quarter, Sara Bell, Naomi Otis and Kirsten Webster combined for the final five points of the half to give Lancaster Bible a 34-29 advantage at the half.

The Chargers maintained a single-digit lead throughout the third quarter and took a nine-point lead, 50-41 after a layup from Goyak with 2:38 left. The Wildcats battled back again and cut their deficit to four, 57-53, just before the end of the quarter.

Lancaster Bible kept its lead throughout the fourth quarter as well, and finally opened a double-digit lead, 68-58, on another layup from Goyak with two minutes to play. The Chargers' defense was excellent in the fourth quarter as Lancaster Bible held the Wildcats to just five points in the first 8:49 of the quarter.

The Coach Says: "We started off slow and sloppy and they were able to take advantage of that," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Katelyn Vanderhoff said. "I thought our offense was stagnant at times and our shot selection was off. We really challenged the team at halftime and they stepped up in the second half. I thought our zone was very effective and we did a good job taking advantage of our mismatch inside."

On the Team After Two Games: "Tonight was a bit rough at times, but we are young and we need to go through these types of games," Vanderhoff said. "We have a lot to learn and we will continue to do so."
