The Lancaster Bible men's volleyball team split its first tri-match of the season on Wednesday as the Chargers swept Wilson, 3-0 and then lost to Eastern Mennonite, 3-0. The Chargers are now 2-3 this season with two of their losses coming at the hands of Eastern Mennonite.Â
Lancaster Bible 3, Wilson 0Wilson was playing its first-ever NCAA men's volleyball match, but didn't show it early on as the Phoenix kept the match close in the first set. The Chargers eventually pulled away in the first set and went on to sweep the Phoenix, 3-0. The Chargers won, 25-20, 25-19, 25-17.Â
Senior
Derek Bigley paced the Chargers with 11 kills and added five digs. Sophomore
Sky Woelkers added six kills on just nine attacks, while
Daniel Kreider had five kills.Â
Freshman
Garyd Martin had a team-high 28 assists and added three aces and four digs. Sophomore
Caleb Strite chipped in with four kills and a team-high 10 digs.Â
As a team, the Chargers had 30 kills against 13 errors on 85 attempts for a .200 hitting percentage. Lancaster Bible had a season-high 12 aces against the Phoenix.
Aaron Hoke had a team-high eight kills for Wilson.
Eastern Mennonite 3, Lancaster Bible 0For the second time in three weeks, Eastern Mennonite swept the Chargers as the Royals also defeated the Chargers, 3-0 on Jan. 20 in Harrisonburg, Va. On Wednesday, Eastern Mennonite won, 25-16, 25-17, 25-14 and improved to 6-5 this season.
Martin kept the Chargers in the first set as he had four blocks in the opening set. Martin finished the match with 14 assists, five digs and five blocks, which are a career-high. Bigley once again led the Chargers with five kills, while he also had a team-high seven digs.
Joshua Rotz, Strite and Woelkers each had three kills, while Rotz also added two aces.Â
Woelkers chipped in with four blocks, as did
Daniel Kreider. Strite added three blocks, while
Nicholas Wesley matched Bigley with seven digs.
William Ragland led the Royals with nine kills, while Colton Frey and Travis Abele each had 11 digs.
Lancaster Bible is back in action this Saturday as the Chargers open up North Eastern Athletic Conference play with a tri-match against Wilson and Penn St. Altoona. The matches will take place in Altoona, Pa. and the Charger will face Wilson at 3 p.m. and the Nittany Lions at 5 p.m.
