Chargers Close Out Spring Break with Two Wins

The Lancaster Bible softball team posted its first two wins of the season over its final two days of spring break in Clermont, Fla. as both victories came against Northwestern (Minn.). The Chargers returned north with a 2-6 record, though played better than their record indicates. Below is a recap of the final four games from the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla.

Lancaster Bible 7, Northwestern 6
After allowing a run in the top of the first, Lancaster Bible answered with two runs in its half of the inning as Courtney Koser and Ali Morton each had RBI singles. The Chargers scored three more runs in the bottom of the second and they all came on one swing of the bat as sophomore Julia D'Arrigo blasted a three-run home run to give Lancaster Bible a 5-1 lead.

D'Arrigo was at it again two innings later as she smashed a two-run homer and extended Lancaster Bible's lead to 7-1. Northwestern got a run back in the fifth inning and then made things interesting in the seventh inning as the Eagles scored four times and brought the tying run to the plate. Junior pitcher Kelsey Collins shut the door however and earned her first win of the season.

D'Arrigo finished 3-for-4 with five RBI and three runs scored...Morton and Morgan Burkholder each went 2-for-3 and Burkholder scored two runs as well...The Chargers had 11 hits...Collins earned the win as she scattered eight hits and allowed six runs, but none were earned as the Chargers committed six errors...Collins also had five strikeouts.

SUNY Potsdam 9, Lancaster Bible 1 (5 innings)
SUNY Potsdam scored the game's first eight runs, including posting a six-spot in the bottom of the third. Lancaster Bible had just two hits, but one was off the bat of Ashli Schmidt as she drove in Morgan Burkholder in the top of the fifth.

D'Arrigo had the other hit for the Chargers, while Burkholder reached base via a walk in the fifth.

Juniata 4, Lancaster Bible 1
The Chargers scored the first run of the game on an RBI groundout from Courtney Koser in the top of the first and held a 1-0 lead until the third when the Eagles tied the game at 1-1. Juniata tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth and held the Chargers scoreless over the final three innings to win, 4-1.

Morton went 3-for-3 for the Chargers, while Zoie Senn was 2-for-3 with a run scored...Richelle Kane and Collins each had a hit as well for the Chargers who had seven hits as a team...Collins pitched the first four innings and scattered five hits and struck out four.

Lancaster Bible 8, Northwestern 5
After the Eagles scored in the top of the first, Lancaster Bible exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the second and took control of the game. Samantha Denson got the hit brigade started and had an RBI single that scored Morton. After a two-run double from Senn, Koser capped the scoring with a two-run home run that made it 7-1 after two innings. An RBI double from Morton made it 8-1 in the bottom of the fifth and though Northwestern made it interesting in the seventh inning again, the Chargers hung on for an 8-5 victory.

Koser and Morton each had two hits, while Senn, Burkholder and Denson each had one hit...Koser knocked in two runs and scored two runs as well...D'Arrigo pitched the first five innings and earned her first win of the season...She allowed just one run and six hits.
