Lancaster Bible Loses Home Finale to Cairn

The Lancaster Bible men's volleyball team dropped its final home match of the season on Wednesday night as the Chargers lost a hard-fought four-set match to Cairn, 3-1 at Horst Athletic Center. The Highlanders won, 26-24, 26-24, 24-26, 25-21. Lancaster Bible falls to 7-20 overall this season, while Cairn is now 5-13.

How it Happened: Lancaster Bible took an early 4-3 lead in the first set, but Cairn rattled off seven straight points to take a 10-4 lead. The teams traded points and the Highlanders eventually led, 15-10 midway through the opening set. The Chargers finally went on a run and scored seven of the next eight points and took a 17-16 lead on an error by Cairn. The Highlanders tied the set on the next point and the teams once again began trading points until a service error from Cairn led to a set-point for the Chargers at 24-23. Lancaster Bible could not convert the opportunity as Micah Godshall blasted home a kill to tie the set at 24-24. Lancaster Bible then committed back-to-back errors and Cairn had won the first set, 26-24.

The Chargers did not let the first set loss linger too long as they took an early 9-1 lead in the second set. Derek Bigley served all nine points and added an ace that made it 8-1, as the Chargers had three kills during the scoring run. Cairn answered back and cut its deficit to three at 10-7, but Lancaster Bible responded and won the next three points to take a 13-7 advantage on an ace from Kasey Gentry. The Highlanders continued to chip away at the Chargers' lead and eventually not only tied the match, but took an 18-17 lead after an error from the Chargers. Lancaster Bible regained its composure and took a 23-21 lead, but Cairn won the next three points and had a set-point at 24-23. Lancaster Bible's Caleb Strite converted a kill and tied the set at 24-24, but once again, Cairn won the final two points and took a 2-0 match lead.

The third set was an exact copy of the first two as the teams traded points back-and-forth. Cairn finally got some separation from the Chargers and took a 22-19 lead late in the set. Lancaster Bible battled back once again and won five the next six points to earn another 24-23 lead. Like the first set, Cairn tied the set at 24-24, but this time it was the Chargers who won the big points as a service error from Cairn and an ace from freshman Garyd Martin gave the home team a set three victory, 26-24.

Cairn jumped out to an early 9-3 lead in the fourth set, but Lancaster Bible chipped away and eventually tied that match at 16-16 on a kill from Strite. With Cairn leading 21-20, back-to-back errors from the Chargers helped the Highlanders to within two points of the victory. The Chargers cut it to 23-21 and then thought they had earned another point, but a controversial call went the Highlanders way and Cairn closed out the fourth set and the match with a kill.
