Lancaster Bible's Losing Streak Reaches Five

The Lancaster Bible softball team is probably glad to be done playing Penn State branch campus for a while as the Chargers were swept in a doubleheader by Penn St. Abington on Wednesday, a day after being swept by Penn St. Berks. The Chargers dropped game one on Wednesday, 6-5 and lost game two, 16-0 in five innings. Lancaster is now 10-13 overall and 1-5 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play, while Penn St. Abington is now 9-11 overall and 5-3 in conference action.

Game 1
Penn St. Abington 6, Lancaster Bible 5

How it Happened: Penn St. Abington scored twice in its first at-bat, but the Chargers answered in the bottom half of the first inning as Kelsey Collins hit a sacrifice fly that scored Julia D'Arrigo. The Chargers then took the lead in the bottom of the second as D'Arrigo hit a two-run triple that scored Samantha Denson and Richelle Kane to give the Chargers a 3-2 advantage.

A Penn St. Abington error allowed Lancaster Bible's next batter Zoie Senn to reach base and D'Arrigo to score and Courtney Koser then doubled to score Senn and put the Chargers ahead, 5-2. Penn St. Abington got a run back in the third, but Lancaster Bible maintained a 5-3 lead until the fifth inning.

In the fifth, the Nittany Lions scored three times, highlighted by Becca Dougherty's third double of the day that scored Bree Lineman. Dougherty would score later in the inning to give Penn St. Abington a 6-5 lead. Lancaster Bible put the tying run on base in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, but could not get the run across as the Nittany Lions won, 6-5.

Inside the Box Score: Senn finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI...Collins was 2-for-3 with an RBI...D'Arrigo was 1-for-3 with two runs scored...Collins suffered her sixth loss of the season, but pitched fairly well as she allowed just four earned runs and struck out three...Dougherty was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored for Penn St. Abington.

The Nittany Lions scored again in the second and had their biggest inning of game two in the third inning as the visitors scored seven times. Lineman and Whitney DeLeogal each had two-run home runs in the inning and the Nittany Lions took a commanding 12-0 lead after three innings of play. Penn St. Abington tacked on four more runs in the fifth as Lancaster Bible committed four of its nine game-two errors and the Nittany Lions won the same score of 16-0 a half inning later.
