Chargers Split with Berks, Head to NEAC Playoffs

The Lancaster Bible baseball team had already clinched a spot in the North Eastern Athletic Conference playoffs prior to Saturday's doubleheader with Penn St. Berks, but the Chargers opponent was yet to be determined for the opening game of the postseason. After a doubleheader split with Penn St. Berks in the final conference doubleheader of the regular season on Saturday in Lancaster, the Chargers' opponent will be a familiar one in the opening game of the NEAC Playoffs next Friday - Penn St. Berks.

The Nittany Lions and Chargers finished second and third respectively in the NEAC standings and will face off in the opening game of the NEAC Playoffs in Abington, Pa. The top-seed, Penn St. Abington, will host SUNY Polytechnic in the other opening game of the tournament. The four-team tournament is double elimination and after Friday's results, the winners will meet in one game on Saturday, while the losers will meet in an elimination game. The tournament will go on until there is a champion and the winner will advance to the NCAA Div. III National Tournament.

Game 1
Penn St. Berks 9, Lancaster Bible 2

How it Happened: Both teams scored a run in the second inning as Hunter Gray's RBI single tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom half of the inning. After an error by the Chargers helped the Nittany Lions take a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning, Keeanu Erb poked a two-run RBI single into right field to extend the visitors' lead to 4-1. Penn St. Berks made it 6-1 an inning later thanks to back-to-back RBI singles, but the Chargers got one of the runs back in the bottom of the inning thanks to an RBI single from Jensen King that scored Gray who got on board with his second hit of the day.

Penn St. Berks tacked on three more runs in the eighth and ninth innings, as Erb had another two-run single and Berks defeated the Chargers, 9-2.

Inside the Box Score: Gray and Will Welsh each finished 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Gray also added an RBI...Erich Carroll finished 1-for-1 with two walks on Senior Day as he and Mitch Kumher were honored prior to game one...Tyler Comport finished 2-for-3 for Penn St. Berks as he added two RBI and four runs...Lancaster Bible used seven pitchers in the game, while Penn St. Berks used just one...That one would be Sean Pavlik who earned a complete-game victory against the Chargers for the second straight season...Lancaster Bible fared a bit better against Pavlik this season as they managed only one hit a year ago, while they had seven on Saturday.

Game 2
Lancaster Bible 6, Penn St. Berks 2

How it Happened: The game was scoreless through 2 1/2 innings, but a two-run single from Welsh put the Chargers on the board in the bottom of the second and a great pitching performance from Lancaster Bible starter Zack Leonard took it from there. Leonard pitched six innings, allowed just five hits and one earned run while striking out four and walking none.

The Chargers added three more runs in the fourth inning as Josh Mayer had a bunt RBI single followed by Justin Taylor and Welsh hitting back-to-back singles of their own. The Nittany Lions scored twice in their half of the sixth inning, but Lancaster Bible extended its lead back to four in the bottom half of the inning as Carroll had an RBI single that scored Welsh. Kumher shut the door in the ninth as Leonard improved to 6-4 this season.

Inside the Box Score: Welsh finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored...Jensen King was 2-for-4 with two runs scored...Carroll was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
