Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Zach Freeman

Scheuing Breaks Shutout Record as Chargers Cruise

The Lancaster Bible College women's soccer team won its second straight game on Wednesday as the Chargers downed Neumann, 5-0 at Charger Field. Four different players scored for the Chargers and senior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Scheuing became the program's all-time leader in shutouts with 27 as the Chargers earned their second straight clean sheet.

How it Happened: Lancaster Bible controlled much of the play throughout the game, including the opening 10 minutes as the Chargers had three quality scoring opportunities, including one chance that rang off the post. Neumann goalkeeper Anna Attardi played well for the Knights as she made six saves in the opening 45 minutes.

Lancaster Bible junior Raegan Horst finally put a shot past Attardi at 31:54 as Horst's strike off of a free kick from 22 yards away went up and over a leaping Attardi. The goal was Horst's first of the year and stood up to be the game-winner.

The Chargers put the pedal to the floor in the second half as the offense exploded for four goals, the first of which came off the head of freshman Barb Foster. Foster headed a great corner kick pass from fellow freshman Hannah Bernstein into the goal and doubled the Chargers' lead to 2-0. Senior Alyssa Wesner netted her first goal of the year just over eight minutes later as she scored off a Brianne Lieb rebound to give the Chargers a 3-0 advantage. Lieb's first shot was saved by Attardi, but Lieb got the ball back and put a shot off the crossbar before Wesner collected the ball and scored into the back of the goal.

Just 1:28 later, Foster scored again off of a corner kick as Abi Brady touched Bernstein's cross to Foster who scored past a diving Attardi. Freshman Maggie Arnold capped the scoring at 75:58 as the Chargers scored again off of a corner kick opportunity. Arnold took Kate Spiezio's cross and sent her first collegiate goal into the back of the net and the Chargers to their largest victory since last October's 8-0 win over SUNY Cobleskill.

By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible outshot Neumann, 26-6 and held a 13-1 edge in corner kick opportunities...Attardi finished with 11 saves, while Scheuing made four stops...Bernstein's two assists were the first two points of her collegiate career...Sophomore Michaela Ragsdale was the only Lancaster Bible field player to play all 90 minutes.

The Coach Says: "It's great to see things we've been working on translate from the practice field to the game field," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Leah Sipe-McDermott said. "We aren't where we need to be as a team yet, but we are getting there in almost every facet of the game. We've seen great improvement over four games and I just love working with this group of girls."

"Having multiple goal scorers and being able to score off set pieces and run of play is very important and shows we have lots of weapons to use," Sipe-McDermott said. "It was very nice to see some freshmen get their first goals and points today as they continue to grow on and off the field."

"I'm so happy for Kaitlyn getting the program-record for shutouts," Sipe-McDermott said. "We always try to have a clean sheet, but today there was something extra special about it and Kaitlyn deserves the record after all of the hard work she has put in for this program."

Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible is now 1-2 all-time against Neumann...Scheuing broke the tie for shutouts in a career with Emily Lloyd who had 26 clean sheets from 2009-12...Four of the five Lancaster Bible goals were assisted...Wesner's goal was the 37th of her career and she is now alone in fourth place on the all-time Lancaster Bible list as she passed Ally Brown (2010-12)...Wesner needs just three goals to become the fourth player in program history with 40 or more goals in a career...Wesner is just 12 points from 100 as she would become the fifth player in program history with 100 points.

Up Next: Lancaster Bible makes its second New York trip in two weeks this weekend as the Chargers face Morrisville State on Saturday (12 p.m.) and Cazenovia on Sunday (1 p.m.).
