The Lancaster Bible College men's soccer team returned to the stadium where its hopes of winning a North Eastern Athletic Conference Championship ended the past two seasons as the Chargers traveled to Morrisville State on Saturday afternoon. Rather than a close game like the two previous contests (the 2014 NEAC Final and the 2015 NEAC Semifinals), the Chargers allowed four first-half goals and lost to the host Mustangs, 5-2. Lancaster Bible is now 1-4 and 0-2 in NEAC play, while Morrisville State improved to 4-1, 3-0 NEAC.
How it Happened: Morrisville State wasted little time getting onto the scoreboard as Joe Sheehan scored his fourth goal of the season just 3:09 into the game to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead. The Chargers didn't panic and tied the game just 7:21 later as sophomore
Brendon Dooley netted his second goal of the season on a blast from 10 yards out.Â
The scoring continued 6:30 later as Morrisville State went ahead for good on Griffen MacWatters' first goal of the season. MacWatters scored against just over 10 minutes later to make it a two-goal advantage for the Mustangs and Ryan Houghtalen's strike 1:16 later increased Morrisville State's lead to 4-1.Â
Morrisville State scored early in the second half and the score remained, 5-1 for much of the second half until sophomore
Caleb Nelson scored with under a minute to go off a feed from
Eric Bailey to cut the Chargers' deficit to 5-2.
By the Numbers: Morrisville State outshot the Chargers, 25-8, including 11-4 in shots on goal...The Mustangs had seven corner kicks, while the Chargers had four...Lancaster Bible goalkeeper
Thiago Naque had five saves as he dropped to 1-2 this season.
The Coach Says: "Today was a frustrating day to say the least," Lancaster Bible Head Coach
Tom Ardt said. "I thought we responded well to their first goal, as we scored shortly after, but then we just gave up goal after goal. We were a bit undisciplined in our own end and didn't play well man-to-man. They were aggressive around the box and made us pay. I think our defense and our guys can play with a team like Morrisville State, but we just didn't have it today. Sunday is all of a sudden a huge game in our season because we can't open NEAC play with three losses."
Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible is now 0-6-2 all-time against Morrisville State...Dooley had just one goal last season and already has two through five games this year...Lancaster Bible gave up five goals just once last season, a 5-0 loss at Houghton on Oct. 27.
