Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Zach Freeman

Late Game Heroics Send Chargers Past 'Cats

The Lancaster Bible College men's soccer team was 1:13 away from its fourth straight loss and what would have been a disastrous 0-3 start in North Eastern Athletic Conference play. Enter Edward Bills and the Chargers offense...

Bills netted the equalizer to tie the game at 1-1 with just over a minute to play and scored the game-winning goal 59 seconds into overtime to propel the Chargers past Cazenovia, 2-1 in Cazenovia, N.Y. on Sunday afternoon. The victory moves the Chargers to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in NEAC play, while Cazenovia is now 1-5, 0-4 NEAC.

How it Happened: Cazenovia got on the board first on Sunday as the Chargers committed a foul outside the box and the Wildcats' Jake Robson took a perfect shot that beat Lancaster Bible goalkeeper Vann Sutphin. The Chargers responded with their own offensive chances and ended up outshooting Cazenovia, 6-4 in the first half.

Lancaster Bible continued to produce scoring chances throughout the second half, but could not collect the equalizer. Fighting off frustration and a stingy Cazenovia defense, the Chargers finally broke through with 1:13 to play as junior Spencer Lockard took the ball into the offensive end and crossed the ball to Bills who buried his first goal of the season.

The game went to overtime, but Jared Jordan and Bills made sure there wasn't too much free soccer for the fans as Jordan took his turn to make a run down the field and made a great pass over top of the defenders to Bills who brought the ball down and fired it into the back of the goal.

By the Numbers: The goals by Bills were his first two of the season...Jordan and Lockard picked up their first assists of the season...Sutphin made four saves as he earned his first victory of the season (1-2)...Lancaster Bible outshot Cazenovia, 16-7, including 11-5 in shots on goal...The Chargers also held the advantage in corner kicks, 8-0.

The Coach Says: "We played well today and did a great job not getting frustrated," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Tom Ardt said. "We could've given into frustration on several occasions, but did a good job staying urgent and producing good scoring chances."

"Both goals came off great passes and runs up the field and Eddie did a great job finishing the play," Ardt said.

"We had to have this one," Ardt said. "It's still early in the season, but three conference losses would have put us in a big hole and we would possibly have had to win the rest of our games to think about the playoffs. We still don't have a ton of wiggle room, but this win gives us confidence and we can head towards next weekend's big games with a bit of a renewed spirit."

Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible is now 3-3 all-time against Cazenovia...Bills had four game-winning goals last season and Sunday's game-winner was the sixth of his collegiate career...Bills had two overtime game-winning goals last season, including one against Cazenovia on Oct. 6, 2015.
