Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Zach Freeman

Lancaster Bible Tops SUNY Poly

The Lancaster Bible College men's soccer team won its second straight game on Friday as the Chargers defeated SUNY Polytechnic, 3-1 at Charger Field. Lancaster Bible is now 3-4 overall and 2-2 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play, while SUNY Poly drops to 1-7 overall and 1-4 in NEAC action.

How it Happened: After the teams spent the first 10 minutes figuring each other out, the Chargers capitalized with an early goal as freshman Dan Bewersdorff scored the first goal of his collegiate career off a feed from Edward Bills. Bills' cross into the middle found Bewersdorff who put it into the back of the net at 12:54.

SUNY Poly held the majority of the possession for the rest of the half as the Wildcats outshot the Chargers, 14-4 in the opening 45 minutes.

In the second half, the Chargers committed a foul and received a yellow card, but the ensuing SUNY Poly free kick was controlled by the Chargers and a pass from Bills to Brendon Dooley sprung Dooley up the left-hand side of the field and into the top of the box where he was taken down by a SUNY Poly defender. Lancaster Bible was awarded a penalty kick and Bills scored his third goal of the season as he converted the chance into the upper right-hand corner of the net.

The Chargers held onto their two-goal lead for much of the second half until SUNY Poly's Daniel Riley converted a free kick from outside of the box that beat Lancaster Bible goalkeeper Vann Sutphin and sliced the Chargers' lead to one.

Just 6:16 later though, Lancaster Bible sophomore Caleb Nelson put the game away for the Chargers as he took a feed from Marco Patz and restored the Chargers' two-goal advantage. Sutphin made a few late stops and Chargers moved back to .500 in conference play.

By the Numbers: SUNY Poly outshot the Chargers, 22-16 and 10-6 in shots on goal...Lancaster Bible held a 10-5 edge in corner kicks, while Sutphin made nine saves for his second win of the season...Bills finished with a goal and an assist and he now three goals in his past two games...Bills also had the game-winning goal for the second straight game and he now has seven game winners in his collegiate career.

Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible is now 3-4-1 all-time against SUNY Poly...Coupled with last season's victory in the NEAC Quarterfinals against the Wildcats, the Chargers have now won two straight against SUNY Poly...The Wildcats already have more losses this season (7), than they did all of last season (6)...The win is the 50th in Head Coach Tom Ardt's career...He is one of two coaches in program history with 50 or more wins, joining all-time wins leader Phil Nelson (1988-93) who has 65.
