The Lancaster Bible College men's soccer team kicked off North Eastern Athletic Conference play on Wednesday and for the second time in three games this season, the Chargers couldn't find their way onto the scoreboard and this time lost, 2-0 to Penn St. Abington. The loss drops the Chargers to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play, while the Nittany Lions improved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in NEAC action.
How it Happened: Lancaster Bible struggled out of the gate as Penn St. Abington's pressure caused the Chargers to make mistakes and eventually resulted in the first goal of the game for the Nittany Lions. Abington's Hernando Villamil cut through two defenders with the ball deep in Lancaster Bible territory and beat goalkeeper
Vann Sutphin with a shot to the lower-right post.Â
The Chargers began to work things out, but did not record their first shot until
Tommy Croke's shot was blocked with 2:32 remaining in the opening 45 minutes.
Penn St. Abington wasted little time in the second half to get its insurance goal as Villamil took a long pass down the field and scored on a breakaway to give the home team a 2-0 advantage.Â
Lancaster Bible finally began creating chances after Vilamil's second goal, but couldn't crack the Abington defense. The Chargers managed just six shots over the 90 minutes with four of them coming in the final 11 minutes.Â
By the Numbers: Penn St. Abington outshot the Chargers, 11-6, including 4-2 in shots on goal...Villamil's goals were his third and fourth of the season...Sutphin finished with two saves as he dropped to 0-2 this season...Lancaster Bible had no corner kick chances, while Abington produced four.
The Coach Says: "We struggled with their pressure early in the game and tried to do too much with the ball," Lancaster Bible Head Coach
Tom Ardt said. "We played into their plan with certain passes we made and didn't realize where they were giving us space. Abington was very athletic and physical and we didn't start playing physical enough until it was too late. Give Abington credit, they did things that helped them win today and we didn't do that until the final 10 minutes or so. This one hurts a bit and we need to recover and pick up our level if we are going to compete in conference games."
