The Lancaster Bible College women's soccer team earned its first win of the season last year in the team's fourth game. In 2016, it only took three games as the Chargers dominated play from the opening whistle to the final whistle on Thursday, shutting out Penn St. Abington, 2-0 in Abington, Pa. The victory is not only the team's first of the season, but the first North Eastern Athletic Conference victory as well.
How it Happened: Lancaster Bible jumped all over Penn St. Abington on Thursday as the Chargers engineered six shots and four corner kicks in the first 18 minutes of the game. The Chargers continued to pour it on later in the half, but came up empty on the scoreboard in the opening 45 minutes as the teams went to halftime scoreless.Â
The Chargers finally cashed in on one of their chances just 4:32 into the second half as junior
Rachel Kumher scored her first goal of the season on a blast from 25 yards out. Lancaster Bible continued to control play and got an insurance goal at the 60:56 mark as sophomore
Kiersten Hatch curled a shot towards the right post that found the back of the net. The goal was the first of Hatch's collegiate career and enabled the Chargers to have some breathing room.
With the extreme heat hitting the turf field, Lancaster Bible continued to sub players in and out during the second half and enabled almost everyone to play on Thursday. The Chargers continued to control the action for the rest of the game, finishing with 14 shots in the second half to the the Nittany Lions' three.
By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible finished the game with 23 shots, while Penn St. Abington managed just three...The Chargers also held the advantage in corner kicks over the Nittany Lions, 16-0...Senior
Kaitlyn Scheuing earned her program-record tying 26th career shutout...Scheuing ties Emily Lloyd ('13) for the most shutouts in program history.
The Coach Says: "I thought we could've played a bit better in the first half, but it was hot and it took a bit to adjust," Lancaster Bible Head Coach
Leah Sipe-McDermott said. "We had a good talk at halftime and Kumher drilled a bomb of a shot to give us the lead."
"We moved the ball very well in the second half and got lots of girls playing time," Sipe-McDermott said. "It's nice to have our first win under our belt, but there are still lots of things to improve upon. The good part though is the freshmen are starting to work things out and figure things out and the whole team is making great strides every day."
Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible is now 6-5-1 all-time against Penn St. Abington...This is the Chargers' first win against Penn St. Abington since the 2012 season...The Nittany Lions had won the last three meetings...Lancaster Bible is now 6-for-6 in NEAC opening games since joining the conference in 2011 as the Chargers have outscored opponents 27-2 over the past six years in the team's opening NEAC contest.Â
