The Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team won its fifth straight game on Saturday afternoon as the Chargers defeated Penn St. Abington, 86-74 in Abington, Pa. The victory sends the Chargers to 9-4 overall this season and 8-0 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play. The Nittany Lions dropped to 6-6, 4-3 NEAC and Lancaster Bible has now beaten every team in the NEAC South Division at least once this season.
How it Happened: Lancaster Bible jumped out to an early lead behind the hot-shooting of
Caitlin Hickey as the freshman scored 10 points in the first 3:57 of the game and helped give the Chargers a 14-4 advantage. Penn St. Abington would eventually cut its deficit to five at 19-14, but a free throw from
Courtney Goyak, followed by a jumper from Hickey and another Goyak layup, restored the Chargers' 10-point lead. Leading by six with under a minute to go, Lancaster Bible got back-to-back layups from
Krissy Pennell and
Kirsten Webster in the final 32 seconds to give the Chargers a 28-18 lead after 10 minutes of play.
The Chargers opened the second quarter on an 8-3 run which Hickey capped with two straight baskets. Lancaster Bible continued to extend its lead, and who else but Hickey, was at it again as she knocked down another two jumpers, the second of which gave the Chargers a 43-26 lead 5:08 to play. Lancaster Bible continued to lead by double digits through the end of the second quarter as free throws by Pennell and Webster gave the Chargers a 51-35 lead at the break.
The teams went bucket-for-bucket for most of the third quarter, but after the Nittany Lions cut the Chargers' lead to 10 with 4:38 to play, Lancaster Bible held Penn St. Abington to just four points the rest of the quarter and took a 66-52 lead after 30 minutes of play.
Lancaster Bible led by as many as 20 throughout parts of the fourth quarter and though Penn St. Abington chipped away towards the end of the contest, the Chargers won by 12 and were never in trouble.
