Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Zach Freeman

Chargers Slide Past 'Stangs

The Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team won its sixth straight game on Friday night as the Chargers defeated Morrisville State, 68-61 at Horst Athletic Center. The victory moves the Chargers to 10-4 overall and 9-0 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play, while the Mustangs dropped to 8-4, 3-2 NEAC.

How it Happened: The first quarter proved to be the reciepe for the entire game as the teams matched basket for basket. The Chargers opened a 9-4 lead six minutes into the game after a three-pointer from Caitlin Hickey and a jumper from fellow freshman Emily Morgan. Lancaster Bible would eventually lead 13-11 after one quarter, but saw that lead disappear in the first nine seconds of the second quarter as Haley Kilmartin completed a 3-point play to give the Mustangs a 14-13 advantage.

Neither team had a lead of more than three points in the second quarter and the Chargers retook the lead late in the half after a free throw from Courtney Goyak and another jumper from Morgan. A late layup from Morrisville State's Jordan Anderson cut the Chargers' lead to one, which they held through halftime, 30-29. Goyak owned the first half as she had 13 points and 11 rebounds to guide the Chargers to a halftime lead.

The back-and-forth affair continued into the third quarter, but Morrisville State took its biggest lead of the game, 44-39, with 3:10 remaining after Anderson completed a three-point play. Baskets from Morgan and Hickey trimmed Lancaster Bible's deficit to one, but Anderson was back at it again and converted another layup with 2:20 left. The Chargers finally tied it after a free throw from Kaylee Boger, but Anderson hit a jumper with 17 seconds to play and gave the Mustangs a 48-46 lead after three quarters.

After Goyak tied the game at 51-51 with a pair of free throws with 7:28 remaining, Boger and Hickey hit 3-pointers 1:20 apart and gave Lancaster Bible a 57-51 lead with 5:37 left to play. Another layup from Anderson almost two minutes later cut Lancaster Bible's lead to one, 58-57, but senior Krissy Pennell answered with a 3-pointer and Morgan followed with a pair of free throws a minute later to restore the Chargers' six-point lead. Morrisville State tried to stay in the game, but Lancaster Bible scored on each of its last three possessions and won by seven.
