The Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team won its seventh straight game on Saturday as the Chargers fought off Cazenovia, 79-66 at Horst Athletic Center. Lancaster Bible is now 11-4 overall and a perfect 10-0 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play. The Wildcats dropped to 1-11 overall and 0-6 in conference action.
How it Happened: Lancaster Bible struggled out of the gate as the Chargers tried to wake up after playing a tough game on Friday night against Morrisville State. Cazenovia led 7-2 three minutes into the contest, but a layup from
Courtney Goyak, followed by a 3-pointer from
Kaylee Boger, tied the game at 7-7. The Wildcats responded and took a 16-10 lead after a jumper from Kelli Shepardson who had 11 points in the opening 10 minutes. Cazenovia never trailed in the first quarter, but a pair of free throws from Lancaster Bible's
Krissy Pennell cut the Chargers' deficit to four just before the end of the quarter.
The exchanged baskets during the opening minutes of the second quarter, but Lancaster Bible finally tied the game at 28-28 on a layup from Goyak with 5:54 remaining in the half. The Chargers took their first lead of the game a minute later as Boger drained her second 3-pointer of the game to give Lancaster Bible a 31-29 advantage. The game remained close for the rest of the half and two free throws from Cazenovia's Skylar Girard with 22 seconds left tied the game at 37-37 heading into halftime.
Lancaster Bible went cold in the early stages of the third quarter as the team didn't score a basket for the first 3:53 of the second half, though Cazenovia managed just four points over the same stretch. Back-to-back layups from Girard gave Cazenovia another six-point lead, 45-39, but Lancaster Bible chipped away at its deficit the rest of the quarter and knotted the game at 54-54 on a jumper from
Emily Morgan with seven seconds left in the quarter.
For all of Lancaster Bible's struggles in the first 30 minutes, they vanished in the fourth as the Chargers opened the final 10 minutes on an 11-3 run that gave them a 65-57 lead with 5:36 remaining. Boger hit another big 3-pointer during the scoring run, that also featured superb play by
Kirsten Webster. Cazenovia would not go away quietly as a pair of free throws from Taylor Spranger with 3:25 left cut the Chargers' lead to five, 69-64. The Wildcats would score just two more points however and Lancaster Bible finished the game on a 10-2 run to win, 79-66.
By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible shot 39.7 percent (29-of-73) from the floor and was 14-of-21 from the free throw line...Cazenovia shot 50 percent from the field, but just 3-of-15 from beyond the arc...Lancaster Bible was led by Goyak who had 22 points and 22 rebounds on 10-of-19 shooting...Freshman
Caitlin Hickey added 17 points, five boards and three steals, while Morgan had 12 points and five rebounds in 20 solid minutes of play...Pennell finished with a double-double of 10 assists and 10 steals and fell just two points short of a triple double...Boger also had 12 points to go with four assists...Girard led the Wildcats with 20 points...Cazenovia turned the ball over 24 times, while Lancaster Bible had just nine turnovers.

Katelyn Vanderhoff said. "We struggled to find our way offensively all game long. Emily and Kaylee stepped up big for us in the third and fourth quarters. Kaylee put a lot of defensive pressure on which led to turnovers and Emily had some big offensive rebounds. Overall this was a solid weekend of playing our first games against North Division opponents and we look forward to playing two more next weekend."
Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible is now 6-0 all-time against Cazenovia...The Chargers are 7-2 at home this season...Lancaster Bible now has double digit conference victories in all six of its seasons in the NEAC...Goyak recorded her sixth straight 20-point, 20-rebound game and eighth overall...She is averaging 19.7 points and 20.6 rebounds per game this season...Pennell's 10 steals are a career-high and a program-record for the Chargers.
