Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Zach Freeman

Winning Streak Snapped

The Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday as the Chargers lost to Keuka, 59-51 in Keuka Park, N.Y. The loss drops the Chargers to 11-5 overall and 10-1 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play, while the Wolves improved to 8-7, 5-5 NEAC.

How it Happened: The first quarter was foreshadowing for the rest of the game as it remained close and neither team could pull away. Senior Krissy Pennell gave the Chargers a 14-10 lead with 1:44 remaining in the opening quarter, but the Wolves responded and tied the game at 14-14 before Pennell converted a layup with seven seconds remaining to give the Chargers a two-point advantage after 10 minutes.

Scoring for both teams slowed down in the second quarter as freshman Caitlin Hickey knocked down two free throws with 3:20 remaining to give the Chargers a 25-20 lead. Lancaster Bible continued to lead and two late free throws from sophomore Courtney Goyak gave the Chargers a 27-24 lead at halftime.

The offense pace didn't pick up much early in the second half as the teams went scoreless over the first two minutes of the third quarter. Goyak's layup with 7:47 remaining gave the Chargers a five-point lead, but Keuka's Sarah Tyler cut the Chargers' lead to two a minute later with a 3-pointer. Freshman Kaylee Boger knocked down a 3-pointer with 4:02 remaining in the third to give the Chargers a 35-29 advantage, but back-to-back layups by the Wolves in the final 1:02 tied the game at 36-36 heading into the fourth quarter.

Hickey gave Lancaster Bible a lead early in the fourth quarter on a 3-pointer, but five straight points by the Wolves gave the home team a 41-39 lead with 8:10 left. Keuka continued to lead through the fourth quarter, but Hickey's layup with 4:42 to play cut the Chargers' deficit to two, 48-46. Keuka responded immediately and went on a 6-0 run over the next 2:06 and dashed any hopes of a Lancaster Bible comeback.

By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible shot just 31.1 percent (19-of-61) from the field, including just 18.8 percent (3-of-16) from 3-point range...Keuka shot 37.1 percent (23-of-62) from the floor...Pennell led the Chargers with 19 points and added three assists...Hickey finished with 16 points and eight rebounds...Goyak finished with a season-low nine points, but did add 17 rebounds...Lauren Anten had 17 points to pace the Wolves.

The Coach Says: "Keuka did a good job of taking away our strengths," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Katelyn Vanderhoff said. "We really struggled finding our rhythm offensively today. I thought we played well in waves, but weren't consistent enough. We have a quick turnaround so we will look to learn from this and get ready for tomorrow."

Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible is now 6-2 all-time against Keuka...The Chargers' 31.1 percent shooting is the lowest of the season and the 19 made field goals are tied for the fewest in a game this season...Saturday marks the first loss of the 2017 calendar year for the Chargers.
