Coming off its first loss of 2017, the Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team put together one of its best quarters of the season exactly when it needed to on Sunday as the Chargers erased an eight-point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat Wells, 63-58 in Aurora, N.Y. The victory sends the Chargers to 12-5 overall and 11-1 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play, while the Express dropped to 5-10 overall and 4-6 in conference play.
How it Happened: Sunday's game looked a lot like Saturday's for Lancaster Bible as the first quarter was a stalemate as neither team could get any footing on the other and after 10 minutes of play the score was the same as it was 10 minutes before -- tied. Freshman
Caitlin Hickey and senior
Krissy Pennell combined for nine of the team's 11 points in the opening quarter.
Wells took an early lead in the second quarter and maintained it throughout the quarter. The Express led by as many as seven in the second quarter, but the Chargers fought back and ended the quarter on a 4-0 run to trail just 26-23 after 20 minutes.Â
The Express continued to lead through the third quarter and began to pull away midway through the third as they used a 10-1 run over three minutes to grab a 42-31 lead with 2:16 left. Lancaster Bible again dominated the end of the quarter though and used an 8-2 run to close the gap to 45-39 after 30 minutes of play.
Another 8-2 run over the first 1:58 of the fourth quarter tied the game at 47-47 as Hickey converted a layup with 8:02 remaining. The Express once again took the lead and led by four, 55-51, with 4:10 remaining after a layup from Kamarie Maturine.Â
Lancaster Bible took its turn to fight back, as a jumper from Pennell and a three-point play from freshman
Emily Morgan gave the Chargers a 56-55 lead with just over three minutes to play. The Chargers scored on their next two possessions as well, as Pennell stole the ball and converted a layup and the next time down the floor, sophomore
Courtney Goyak hit a jumper to give Lancaster Bible a 60-55 lead.
Wells cut the Chargers' lead to two, 60-58 with under a minute to play, but a layup from Hickey and a late free throw from Pennell gave the Chargers a weekend split in New York.

The Coach Says: "This was a big win for us today," Lancaster Bible Head Coach
Katelyn Vanderhoff said. "We didn't have the best first half and we played some undisciplined basketball. Towards the end of the third quarter, we switched things up defensively and that created momentum for our team. We carried that momentum into the fourth quarter and played smart basketball. I am proud of the way we fought and pushed through a 12-point deficit at one point."
