The Lancaster Bible College men's volleyball team earned its first victory of the season on Wednesday night as the Chargers defeated Alvernia, 3-0 at Horst Athletic Center. The Chargers won, 25-21, 25-21, 25-21. The win moves the Chargers to 1-2, while the Crusaders, playing the first match in program history, dropped to 0-1.
How it Happened: The first set went back-and-forth early on, but the Chargers were able to grab a 12-8 lead after four straight points, three of which came off of Alvernia errors. The Crusaders hung around and trailed just 18-15, before a kill from Lancaster Bible's
Kaleb Ansell and another Alvernia error, gave the Chargers a 20-15 lead. Lancaster Bible maintained its lead through the end of the set, which freshman
Kole Horst put away with back-to-back kills.
It was Alvernia who jumped out to a lead in the second set as the Crusaders led 6-1 after three straight kills from Justin Gibbs, Anthony Dadson and Spencer Matthews. Lancaster Bible slowly began to chip away at its deficit and finally tied the match at 11-11 after rattling off four straight points, the final one coming off an ace from freshman
Jacob Faust. The Crusaders retook the lead at 15-13, but Lancaster Bible responded again and scored six straight points, once again benefiting from Alvernia errors. Lancaster Bible maintained its lead the rest of the set and matched the first set score, 25-21.
The Crusaders took another early lead in the third set and led 3-0, but Lancaster Bible was up to the task again and knotted the match at 9-9 off two straight errors from the Crusaders. With the  Chargers trailing, 10-9, Lancaster Bible went on another run and led 14-10 following four straight errors by the Crusaders and a kill from sophomore
Daniel Kreider. Alvernia made its own comeback later in the set and tied the match at 19-19 after three straight points, the last coming off an ace from Justin Gibbs.
The Chargers led 23-21 late in the third set and it was the freshmen who sealed the victory for Lancaster Bible as Horst and Faust finished off the Crusaders with back-to-back kills.
By the Numbers: Alvernia led Lancaster Bible in kills, 33-28, but the Chargers had just nine errors, while the Crusaders had 19...Horst led Lancaster Bible with eight kills, six digs and five blocks, while
Kasey Gentry, Faust and Kreider each added six kills...Ansell had a team-high 25 assists, while Kreider also added four blocks...Collin Welteroth led the Crusaders with 11 kills...The Chargers had a team hitting percentage of .306, a season-best.
Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible now leads the all-time series, 1-0 over Alvernia...The two teams will meet in Reading, Pa. on March 28...This is the firs time since the 2012 season that Lancaster Bible has won its home opener...The Chargers were 3-6 at home last season.
Up Next: The Chargers return to the court this weekend when they will play three matches at Arcadia University...Lancaster Bible plays Arcadia on Friday at 5 p.m. and will then battle Wilkes and Cairn on Saturday.
