Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Zach Freeman

Chargers Cage 'Cats on Senior Day

The Lancaster Bible College men's soccer team returned to the win column on Saturday, defeating Cazenovia, 3-2 on Senior Day at Charger Field. Lancaster Bible is now 7-8-2 overall and 4-2-1 in NEAC play, while the Wildcats are 7-7 overall and 3-4 in conference action.

How it Happened: Lancaster Bible senior Justin Stoltzfus opened the scoring just 2:52 into the contest, as he picked up a rebound off a shot from fellow senior Spencer Lockard, and scored into the left-hand side of the goal. Sophomore Dan Bewersdorff also assisted on the goal, which began off a corner kick.

The Chargers continued to have scoring chances throughout the first half, including a good opportunity for junior Jared Jordan, late in the first half, but Lancaster Bible couldn't convert and took a 1-0 lead into the half.
Lancaster Bible freshman Rama Mugisha doubled the Chargers' lead to 2-0 at 56:32, as he stepped in front of a pass from junior Caleb Nelson and put the ball into the right-hand side of the net.

The two-goal lead lasted just 2:25, as Jadon Barton was left alone in the box for a moment and took a pass and scored his eighth goal of the year. Less than 12 minutes later, Barton was at it again, pouncing on a rebound and scoring into an empty goal after Lancaster Bible goalkeeper Thiago Naque had dove to make the initial save.

Both teams looked for the potential game-winning goal following Barton's second goal and just under 12 minutes later, the Chargers found it off the foot of freshman Chad Tolson. Tolson stepped in front Cazenovia Tom Nicholls just prior to the ball getting to him and was able to flick the ball through him and into the back of the net with 8:50 to play.

The goal stood up to be the game-winner, though Cazenovia had a few good chances to get the equalizer, including a possible foul in the box that wasn't called.

By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible outshot Cazenovia, 24-14, including 16-7 in shots on goal…The Chargers held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks as well…Nicholls made 13 saves for Cazenovia…Naque had five stops for the Chargers, as he earned his sixth victory of the season…Tolson's goal was his third of the season, while Mugisha took the team-lead with his eighth of the season.

The Coach Says: "Give credit to the guys for fighting off a hungry Cazenovia team and getting the victory," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Tom Ardt said. "It wasn't always pretty, but we were able to capitalize late to win. Being sharper in the box is going to be huge for us and we must be better. We need to have composure along with an intensity to finish the chances that we create."

On the Seniors: "Huge thanks to our seniors for their commitment to our program during their time here," Ardt said. "They have changed LBC soccer and have left big shoes to fill."
