Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Zach Freeman

Chargers Stop 'Stangs

After suffering possibly its worst loss of the season on Tuesday at Gallaudet, the Lancaster Bible College men's soccer team played one of its best weekend's in a long time on Saturday and Sunday, as the Chargers completed the weekend sweep with a 1-0 victory over Morrisville State at Charger Field. Lancaster Bible is now 8-8-2 overall and 5-2-1 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play, while the Mustangs dropped to 6-9-1 overall and 5-3-1 in conference action.

How it Happened: The teams played much of the first half in the midfield, with very few offensive chances coming for either team. Each team had four shots in the opening 45 minutes and there were five combined corner kicks, but good scoring chances were hard to come by.

The offensive chances stayed fairly limited in the second half as well, though the intensity picked up, as each team began to realize that one goal may win the contest.

That one goal finally came for the Chargers at 73:47 when sophomore Ivan Correa took a free kick from 24 yards out and buried it into the right-hand side of the goal. Correa, straight on from the goal, put the ball up and around the ball and into the goal, just outside the outstretched arm of Morrisville State goalkeeper Cody Gaines.

The Mustangs pressed for the equalizer and had their best chance with under a minute to play, as a shot was put on goal with Lancaster Bible goalkeeper Vann Sutphin at the top of the box. Senior Spencer Lockard got to the ball in mid-air and knocked it aside, preserving the 1-0 victory for the Chargers.

By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible outshot the Mustangs, 12-10, but Morrisville State held a 5-4 edge in shots on goal…Sutphin made five saves in the second half, as he and fellow senior Thiago Naque split time between the pipes on Sunday…The Chargers also held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks…Correa's goal was his first since the 2014 season, as he did not play during the 2015 or 2016 seasons.

The Coach Says: "I'm really proud of the way we played today, and thought we had great communication for 90 minutes," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Tom Ardt said. "Our back line and central midfield led us today and we had some quality opportunities, though we still struggled to finish. Tito [Correa] had a really nice goal and that turned out to be the difference. It's great to play well and beat a good team, especially Morrisville, as they have had our number for a really long time. I thought we raised our standard today and we have some momentum heading into a huge week."

Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible is now 1-6-2 all-time against Morrisville State, as the Chargers earned their first-ever victory over the Mustangs on Sunday…The Chargers lost to Morrisville State, 5-2 last season in Morrisville, N.Y…Correa now has 12 career goals…Sutphin earned the win, his first of the season, and 13th of his career…The win for Ardt is the 65th of his career, tying him with Phil Nelson (1988-93) for the most in program history.

Up Next: Lancaster Bible heads to Chambersburg, Pa. on Wednesday to face Wilson at 2 p.m…The game has major NEAC Playoff implications, as the Chargers are right behind the Phoenix in the NEAC South Division standings.
