Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Zach Freeman

Hey Arnold!

Heading into Saturday afternoon's regular season finale, the Lancaster Bible College women's soccer team knew it needed to earn a victory over Penn St. Abington to advance to the North Eastern Athletic Conference Playoffs, assuming that Gallaudet was going to defeat St. Elizabeth earlier in the day. Strange things happen sometimes in soccer and one of those strange things happened in Morristown, N.J., as St. Elizabeth earned a tie with Gallaudet and knocked the Bison out of playoff contention, sealing the Chargers' playoff spot early in its game with Penn St. Abington.

The Chargers either didn't care or didn't know, because they went out and defeated Penn St. Abington, 2-1 in overtime at Charger Field and earned the second seed in the NEAC South Division and will host Bryn Athyn on Tuesday at 2 p.m.

How it Happened: Penn St. Abington opened the scoring on Saturday, as Michelle Latronica scored at 9:55 to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 lead. Latronica came across the middle of the field and blasted a shot from 22 yards out up and over Lancaster Bible goalkeeper Kendra Brown.

Lancaster Bible took over much of the possession from there, but couldn't get the equalizer until 33:29 when senior Raegan Horst took a pass from freshman Karissa Akselsen and scored into the lower left-hand corner.

The game remained tied through halftime and Lancaster Bible had many scoring opportunities in the second half, including Horst's shot at 76:22 that rang off the crossbar.

Neither team could score in the second half and like the men's game right before it, the Chargers and Nittany Lions headed to overtime.

In the extra frame, Lancaster Bible took possession immediately and junior Maddie Dionne drove down the near side of the field and crossed the bal l into the box where Maggie Arnold redirected the ball which hit the left post and went into the back of the net.
