Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Zach Freeman

Chargers Top River Hawks

The Lancaster Bible College men's basketball capped its first semester schedule with an 87-74 victory over Susquehanna on Saturday at Horst Athletic Center. The Chargers improved to 7-2 with the win, while the River Hawks fell to 4-5. Early in the second half, Lancaster Bible senior Herbie Brown became the 24th player in program history to eclipse the 1,000-point mark, as he drained a 3-pointer and sent the crowd to its feet.

How it Happened: The game began with a ferocious pace, as the teams sprinted end-to-end and seemingly couldn't miss. Each team began the game 5-for-6 from the field and Herbie Brown's layup 5:49 into the game, cut the Chargers' deficit to one, 15-14. Susquehanna eventually led, 19-16, but senior Bill Livezey's 3-pointer with 12:01 remaining in the opening half, knotted the game at 19-19.

Livezey connected on another 3-pointer less than a minute later to give the Chargers a 22-19 lead, and Lancaster Bible built as much as a four-point lead, before Susquehanna tied the game at 27-27 with just over eight minutes to play. Lancaster Bible used an 8-2 run over the next five minutes to grab a 35-29 lead, but the River Hawks battled back again, and Ryan Traub's layup with 27 seconds left in the half tied the game at 39-39 and the teams went to the locker room at the same score.

Lancaster Bible came out firing in the second half, as the teams traded baskets to open the half, but three straight 3-pointers, two from senior Jalen Archer, and another from Herbie Brown (his 1,000th point), gave Lancaster Bible a 50-43 lead. Susquehanna cut its deficit to five, 50-45 with 16:05 to play, but they would never get closer, as Lancaster Bible went on a 13-0 run over the next 4:40 to take a 63-45 lead. Four different players scored during the run, led by junior Christo Majok's six points.

The Chargers continued to lead by double digits, and took its biggest lead with 7:12 to play, 76-53, on a dunk by junior Quentin Davis. The River Hawks never quit however, and cut the Chargers' lead to 10, 80-70 with under two minutes to play. Lancaster Bible, which struggled at times at the free throw line on Saturday, knocked down enough freebies in the final minute to pull away once again and earn the 13-point victory.

The Coach Says: "I thought we came out in the second half and defended well, which got us chances in transition," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Zach Filzen said. "We took advantage of some of those chances and also played well in the half-court offense. I think today was the best we've played in the half-court offense in a really long time. We made the extra pass, and I'm proud of the guys for the way they responded after Wednesday's loss."

On Herbie Brown: "I'm so proud of Herbie, and I know the whole team is as well," Filzen said. "He has bought in so much to this program and he does everything we ask of him. He's had a heck of a career here and he works hard, cares for others, and really embodies everything we want in a men's basketball player here at Lancaster Bible."

On the Team Heading to Christmas Break: "It's good for us to have a break here, this feels like the right time," Filzen said. "We've had good games, mediocre games, and bad games this season, but overall, we've gotten off to a good start and it's time for a rest."
