The Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team dropped to 5-5 this season with a 58-56 loss to Neumann on Saturday at Horst Athletic Center. Neumann is now 6-4 this year, and defeated the Chargers for the second straight season.
How it Happened: The first quarter began slow, as the Chargers tied the game, 6-6, on a jumper from sophomore Caitlin Hickey with 5:44 to play in the opening quarter. The Knights used an 8-1 run over the next three minutes to grab a 14-7 lead, but Lancaster Bible closed the quarter on a 4-0 run and trailed by three after 10 minutes.
Neumann took its biggest lead of the game, 29-18 with 5:25 to play in the first half, but Lancaster Bible's defense stepped up following the three-point play from Neumann's Nafisa Saunders, and allowed just two points the rest of the quarter. In the meantime, Lancaster Bible used an 11-2 run to trail by just two, 31-29 at halftime.
Lancaster Bible continued to hold Neumann in check in the early parts of the third quarter and took a 39-33 lead with 4:56 left on a layup from senior Kirsten Webster. Over a 10 minute stretch, Lancaster Bible outscored Neumann, 21-4, but Neumann hung tough, just as the Chargers had in the first half, and Lancaster Bible led just 45-44 after 30 minutes of play.
A 3-pointer by Hickey gave Lancaster Bible a 50-44 lead with 7:53 to play in the game, but the Knights answered with six straight points to tie the game at 50-50 with 6:02 left. After the teams traded baskets, Minika Glenn put the Knights ahead for good, 54-52 with 3:58 to play. The Chargers couldn't get over the hump the rest of the way, as Saunders drained two free throws with 15 seconds to play. Sophomore RuthAnn Hostetler converted a layup with two seconds left to cut the Chargers' deficit to two, but Neumann dribbled out the remaining time.
By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible shot 21-of-43 (48.8 percent) from the field, but just 1-of-8 from beyond the arc…Neumann was 24-of-60 (40 percent) and 3-of-20 from 3-point range…The Chargers held a 35-21 edge in rebounds…Webster had a career-high 27 points and added four rebounds, three assists and three steals…Hickey had 15 points, while Goyak had nine points and 22 rebounds…Minika Glenn had a team-high 20 points for the Knights.
The Coach Says: "Today was a disappointing game for us," Lancaster Bible Head Coach
Katelyn Vanderhoff said. "We had some good moments and some bad, but just couldn't handle their pressure and turned it over 33 times. We aren't going to win many games if we turn the ball over that much. We battled, which I liked, and still had a chance to win at the end, but just couldn't execute enough down the stretch."
Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible is 0-3 all-time against Neumann…The Chargers lost, 86-78 in Aston, Pa. last season and also lost during the 1987-88 season in the first-ever meeting between the teams…Lancaster Bible is just 1-5 in non-conference games this season and is now 2-3 at home this year…Neumann is 3-3 on the road this year and 4-4 in non-conference contests…Goyak's double-double streak of 38 games ended on Saturday, as she had nine points and 22 rebounds...Webster's 27 points are a new career-high, breaking her record of 26 which she set on Dec. 5 at Gallaudet.
