Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Zach Freeman

Three-Headed Monster Slays Nittany Lions

The Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team got back into the win column a day after falling to a top 25 opponent, as the Chargers defeated Penn St. Berks, 84-70 at Horst Athletic Center. The Chargers were led by the three-headed monster of Courtney Goyak, Caitlin Hickey and Kirsten Webster, as the three combined for 71 points, 33 rebounds and eight assists.

Lancaster Bible is now 3-3 overall this season and 2-0 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play, while the Nittany Lions fell to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

How it Happened: Lancaster Bible sprinted out to a 17-4 lead over the first 6:09 of the opening court, as Webster capped the run with a layup. The Chargers would eventually lead by as many as 15, as Hickey drained a 3-pointer with 2:05 left in the first quarter to give Lancaster Bible a 22-7 advantage. Penn St. Berks scored the final five points of the quarter however, and cut its deficit to 10 after the opening 10 minutes of play.

After the Nittany Lions scored the first four points of the second half, Hickey knocked down a jumper to restore the Chargers' eight-point lead at 24-16. Over the next 5:17 however, Penn St. Berks used a 13-0 run to grab a 27-24 lead, as the Chargers went cold from the field and the Nittany Lions began to find their stroke. During the scoring run, Penn St. Berks junior Deanna Doddona drained a 3-pointer to give her 1,000 points for her collegiate career, as she became just the fifth person in program history to topple the feat.

Penn St. Berks took its biggest lead of the game, 31-27 with 2:29 to play in the half, but Lancaster Bible scored the final three points of the opening half, and trailed 31-30 after 20 minutes.

For everything that went wrong in the second quarter, the third quarter was all Lancaster Bible, as the Chargers used a 16-2 run over the first 3:31 of the quarter to take a 46-33 lead. Goyak, Hickey and Webster combined to score 24 of the team's 29 points in the third quarter, and hte Chargers led, 59-50 after 30 minutes of play.

Looking to replicate the second quarter, Penn St. Berks scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to cut its deficit to five, but Lancaster Bible would have nothing of it, and built its lead to 12 at 70-58 after Kaylee Boger's second 3-pointer of the day with 5:25 to play. The Chargers maintained their double-digit lead and then used a late 10-0 run to bury the Nittany Lions, eventually winning by 14.

The Coach Says: "I thought we played pretty well today, but we need to eliminate some of those mid-game lapses we are having," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Katelyn Vanderhoff said. "We are still learning our identity and finding our strengths and I think we did some of those things today. K-Webb (Webster) is playing at the highest level of her collegiate career, Courtney continues to be solid inside, and Caitlin is quiet, but you look up and she has 20 points."

On the Week that Was: "I wish we had played better against Wilson on Tuesday, but it gave us a chance to re-evaluate some of the things we had been doing, and I thought we played a strong game against a good Messiah team on Friday night and then took care of our business today," Vanderhoff said.
