The Lancaster Bible College men's volleyball team hosted its first North Eastern Athletic Conference Weekend in several seasons this weekend and it proved to be a rousing success as the Chargers won twice on Friday evening and overcame a 2-0 deficit to Medaille on Saturday afternoon to complete a three-match sweep. The Chargers are now 11-5 overall and 5-1 in NEAC play.
Lancaster Bible 3, D'Youville 1
25-21, 23-25, 25-18, 25-19
How it Happened: Both teams played well in the opening set as neither team could pull away and the match went back-and-forth. Two straight points by D'Youville tied the match at 17-17, but a kill from sophomore
Daniel Kreider, followed by a Spartans' error, gave the Chargers a 19-17 advantage. A Lancaster Bible error a few points later cut D'Youville's deficit to 22-20, but Lancaster Bible won three of the final four points to take the set, 25-21 as freshman
Kole Horst hammered a kill to seal the victory.
The Chargers trailed 6-3 early in the second set, but rattled off five straight points, the last one on another kill from Kreider, to take an 8-6 lead. Lancaster Bible continued to lead through the set, including a 17-13 lead after an error by the Spartans, but D'Youville's Pat Stroh took over in the latter part of the set and three straight kills from the junior got the Spartans back into the set at 22-21. The Chargers carried a 23-22 lead late into the set, but D'Youville won the final three points, two of them coming on Lancaster Bible errors, to take the second set, 25-23.
Lancaster Bible put the third set behind them and opened with a 5-0 run with all five points coming off of D'Youville errors. The Spartans made a run in the middle of the set, but Lancaster Bible never trailed and took the third set, 25-18.
D'Youville took an early 7-6 lead in the fourth set, but the Chargers won five of the next six points to grab an 11-8 advantage. Lancaster Bible's lead was trimmed to 15-13 later in the set, but the Chargers responded again and won five of the next six points to take a 20-14 lead. Junior
Kasey Gentry had two of the five points for the Chargers who went on to win the set, 25-19.
By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible had 53 kills, while D'Youville had 36…Gentry led the Chargers with 20 kills and nine digs, while

Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible is now 2-7 all-time against D'Youville…The 20 kills for Gentry are a season-high and the fifth time this season he's had double-digit kills…The 53 team kills are the third time the Chargers have had 50 or more kills in a match this season and Lancaster Bible is 2-1 this year when they record 50 or more kills…The victory was the 100th in program history for the Chargers.

How it Happened: Lancaster Bible dominated the first two sets as the Chargers jumped out to a 20-8 lead in the opening set and led 20-10 during the second set. The third set was closer as the Chargers emptied their bench and rested many of the starters.
Lancaster Bible led 13-7 after a kill from
Jacob Faust and 15-10 after another kill from Faust, but Hilbert responded by winning five of the next six points and trailed just 16-15 after a Lancaster Bible service error. Hilbert took its first lead at 20-19 and the match was tied 23-23 after a blocking error from Lancaster Bible.
The teams traded points to knot the game at 24-24, but a Hilbert error followed by a kill from
Sky Woelkers gave the Chargers the set and the match.
By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible had 39 kills against just eight errors on 81 attempts…Senior
Derek Bigley had a team-high 10 kills, while sophomore
Daniel Kreider had nine kills…Woelkers finished with three kills and two blocks, while

How it Happened: The opening two sets played out almost the exact same way as the teams traded points for the entire set and went on scoring runs, but at the end of each set, it was the Mavericks who converted their chances, while Lancaster Bible missed out on theirs and Medaille took a two sets to none lead.
Lancaster Bible took an early 10-4 lead in the third set, but Medaille closed it to 10-8 with four straight points. The Chargers led 12-11 midway through the set, but won six of the next seven points to grab an 18-12 advantage. Lancaster Bible held off a late Medaille charge and took the third, 25-18.
Riding the momentum of the third set win, the Chargers jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the fourth. The Mavericks fought back and trailed just 13-10 after a Lancaster Bible error, but the Chargers hung tough and rattled off eight straight points to take a 21-10 lead. Kreider had three kills during the run, while Bigley added an ace. The Chargers went on to win the fourth set, 25-13 to set up a deciding fifth set.
In the fifth, Lancaster Bible took an early 5-1 lead thanks to three straight Medaille errors, but the Mavericks fought back and trialed just 7-6 after back-to-back errors from the Chargers. Lancaster Bible's defense continued to play well and Medaille was forced into errors again as the Chargers took the next four points, three of them coming off Maverick mistakes. Lancaster Bible led 13-10 late in the set and a kill from Horst and a team block from Kreider, Gentry and Ansell, gave the Chargers the match.
By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible had 47 kills, while Medaille had 43...The Chargers had just 22 errors, while the Mavericks had 44...Kreider led Lancaster Bible with 12 kills and four blocks, while Gentry had 11 kills, eight digs and six blocks...Horst added eight kills, while Ansell had five kills, 38 assists and 12 digs to go with three blocks...Calvin Crosby had 14 kills to pace the Mavericks.
Information Hodge Podge: The victory was the first for the Chargers over Medaille as Lancaster Bible is now 1-7 all-time against the Mavericks...The five-set victory is the first for Lancaster Bible since the Chargers defeated Penn St. Altoona, 3-2 on Mar. 25, 2014...This also marks the first time in program history the Chargers have come back from being down two sets to win a match.
