Chargers Take Two of Three at NEAC Weekend

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 The Lancaster Bible College men's volleyball team won its seventh straight match on Friday night and then split Saturday's matches in Utica, N.Y. as the Chargers opened North Eastern Athletic Conference play with a 2-1 record. Lancaster Bible is now 8-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play after defeating Wells and Keuka and losing to SUNY Polytechnic.

How it Happened: The teams split the opening two sets as the Chargers took the first set, 25-17, before falling 25-14 in the second. In the third, the teams traded points until the middle of the set when the Chargers finally got some breathing room at 18-14. The Chargers took the four-point lead after a kill from Kasey Gentry and an ace from Jacob Faust. Lancaster Bible extended its lead to 21-16, but the Express answered with five straight points and tied the set at 21-21. The Chargers hung tough and earned the next two points off a kill from Derek Bigley and a Wells' error. Freshman Kole Horst sealed the set a few points later as he smashed home another kill which gave Lancaster Bible the third set, 25-23.

The Chargers rode the momentum into the fourth set and took an early 10-5 lead. Leading 14-9 later in the set, the Chargers pulled away for good as they scored four straight points to build an 18-9 advantage. Lancaster Bible scored two of the four points via blocks as Daniel Kreider had a hand in both as he had two of his team-high four blocks. Though Wells would cut its deficit to three, 24-21, the Chargers won the match on Gentry's eighth kill of the night just a point later.

By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible had 52 kills, while Wells had just 34...The Chargers also led in digs, 41-31, and blocks, 9-5...Bigley led the Chargers with 13 kills, while Horst had 12 kills, eight digs, four blocks and two aces...Gentry and Faust each had eight kills, while Gentry also added nine digs...Kreider added seven kills and four blocks, while Kaleb Ansell had 43 assists and eight digs...Richard Solano had a team-high 10 digs.

Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible is now 4-5 all-time against Wells...The victory snaps a four-match losing streak to the Express...Lancaster Bible's seven wins equal last season's total when the Chargers finished 7-23, 2-14 NEAC...The seven wins are also the most in a single season since the Chargers went 16-16 during the 2013 campaign.

How it Happened: The first set was close throughout, but the Wildcats used two late scoring runs to take the opening set, 25-20. In the second set, the Chargers trailed early in the set, but finally cut their deficit to 13-12, but three straight points from SUNY Polytechnic gave the host team a four-point lead, which proved to be too much for Lancaster Bible as the Chargers lost, 25-20. The third set looked quite similar to the second as the Chargers trailed, but then fought back to get to within one at 13-12. This time, SUNY Polytechnic won seven of nine points and put the Chargers away.

By the Numbers: SUNY Polytechnic had 42 kills, while the Chargers managed just 25...For the first time all season, Lancaster Bible did not record an ace, while the Wildcats had seven...Bigley led the Chargers with eight kills, while Faust added seven...Kreider chipped in with five kills and three blocks, while Ansell had 20 assists and two blocks.

Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible is now 9-7 all-time against SUNY Polytechnic...The .147 hitting percentage was the second-lowest of the season for Lancaster Bible.

Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible improved to 4-6 all-time against Keuka...The two NEAC wins equal the number of conference wins the Chargers had all of last season.
