The Lancaster Bible College men's volleyball team won its fourth straight match on Tuesday night as the Chargers defeated Alvernia, 3-1 in Reading, Pa. Lancaster Bible won, 25-12, 23-25, 25-19, 25-19 and improved to 23-7 this season, while Alvernia dropped to 10-13.Â
How it Happened: Lancaster Bible dominated the first set as the Chargers opened a 14-4 lead and took the set, 25-12. The Chargers had 10 kills against just two errors in the opening set, while the Crusaders had seven kills and 11 errors.
The second set couldn't have been more different as the teams engaged in a set-long back-and-forth. Trailing, 21-19 late in the set, Lancaster Bible won four straight points, two of which came via kills by freshman
Kole Horst. Alvernia called timeout however and used two kills, an ace and an error by the Chargers, to take the second set, 25-23.Â
Despite Alvernia having the momentum after the second set, Lancaster Bible was able to stem the tide and took an early 10-3 lead in the third set. The Crusaders chipped away at Lancaster Bible's lead and trailed just 16-14 after a kill from Spencer Matthews. The Chargers hung tough again though and won five of the next six points, two of them coming off kills from senior
Derek Bigley and Horst. Alvernia got back to within four at 23-19, but a kill from junior
Kasey Gentry and then a block assist by Bigley, Horst and
Sky Woelkers, sealed the set, 25-19.
Lancaster Bible stayed in control for much of the fourth set, though Alvernia cut its deficit to 21-19 late in the set. Not wanting to go to a fifth set, the Chargers took control and won the final four points of the match, as Bigley put home a kill to end the match.
By the Numbers: Alvernia led the Chargers in kills, 41-37...Lancaster Bible had 52 digs to Alvernia's 45...The Chargers led in blocks, 9-5...Bigley led the Chargers with 16 kills against just two errors on 31 attempts...He also had four blocks, two aces and six digs in one of his best matches of the season...Horst had a solid night as well, with 10 kills, four blocks and four aces...Sophomore
Daniel Kreider added five kills and five digs as well too for the Chargers.
Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible is now 2-0 all-time against Alvernia as this is the first season the Crusaders have had men's volleyball...The Chargers defeated Alvernia, 3-0 at Horst Athletic Center on Jan. 25...Lancaster Bible's 23 wins this season are tied for the most in NCAA Division III...The Chargers .767 winning percentage this season is the 11th-best mark in NCAA Division III.
