The Lancaster Bible College softball team not only opened North Eastern Athletic Conference play with two wins on Saturday, but snapped a six-game losing streak as well. The Chargers defeated Gallaudet, 3-2 in game one and 10-7 in game two to sweep a doubleheader from the Bison in Washington, D.C. The Chargers are now 5-11 overall and 2-0 in NEAC play, while the Bison are 9-12-1 overall and 0-2 in conference action.
Lancaster Bible 3, Gallaudet 2 -- Game 1
How it Happened: Game one was a pitcher's duel for much of the seven innings as Lancaster Bible's
Kelsey Collins and Gallaudet's Alyssa Barlow held batters at bay. Lancaster Bible got on the board in the third inning as sophomore
Zoie Senn doubled home
McKayla Smucker who had singled earlier in the inning.
Gallaudet got its first hit of the game in the bottom of the fourth and tied the game later in the inning on an RBI single by Courtney Thomas. After a scoreless fifth inning, Lancaster Bible plated two more runs in the top of the sixth inning as Senn led off the inning with her first home run of the season. Senior
Julia D'Arrigo singled later in the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore
Samantha Denson stepped to the plate and added an insurance run for the Chargers as she singled home D'Arrigo.Â
The insurance run proved important as the Bison scored in the bottom half of the inning to make it 3-2 in favor of the Chargers. After Lancaster Bible went down in order in the top of the seventh, Gallaudet's Jordan Hogan led off the bottom of the inning with a double. Hogan advanced to third on a groundout and was a bag away from tying the game with one out. Collins, however, got the next two batters to pop out in the infield and Lancaster Bible had its first conference win.
Inside the Box Score: Senn finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored...Denson was 2-for-3 as well with an RBI, while D'Arrigo and Smucker were both 1-for-3 with a run scored...Collins went the distance and allowed just five hits, while striking out eight...She is now 4-6 this season and lowered her earned run average to 2.87.
Lancaster Bible 10, Gallaudet 7 -- Game 2
How it Happened: The Chargers wasted no time getting on the board in game two as D'Arrigo, the third batter of the game, hit a two-run home run that scored Senn, to give the Chargers an early 2-0 lead. After the Chargers scored another run in the top of the second, Gallaudet plated three runs in the third to knot the game at 3-3.Â
Lancaster Bible re-took the lead in the fifth inning as D'Arrigo and Denson had back-to-back RBI hits to give the Chargers a 5-3 advantage. Lancaster Bible poured it on in the top of the sixth as the Chargers sent nine batters to play and scored five runs on four hits and two errors. Freshman
Martina McCauley and D'Arrigo had doubles in the inning as Lancaster Bible took a 10-3 lead.Â
Gallaudet scored four times in the bottom of the sixth and brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but Lancaster Bible closed the door and earned the sweep.
